Carolinas Takes a 3-1 Lead at Mid-Atlantic Challenge Junior Girls Matches
PINEHURST, N.C. –– The eight-player Carolinas team won three of four first day four-ball matches over their Virginia-Maryland counterparts and own a two-point lead, 3-1, entering Sunday’s final day singles play at the 12th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge being conducted at The Country Club of North Carolina’s Cardinal Course.
A team of juniors mixing Virginia and Maryland players against their North and South Carolina counterparts are competing in the event.
Virginia notched its only win on the opening day in the first encounter. In the closest match of the day, Lyndsey Hunnell (Troutville, Va.) and Jordan McKelvin (Westminster, Md.) got past the tandem of Reona Hirai (Summerville, S.C.)-Jessica Spicer (Bahama, N.C.), 1 up.
Carolinas won the final three encounters to provide the difference after day one. The combinations of Kelli Murphy (Elgin, S.C.)-Madison Moosa (Charlotte, N.C.) as well as North Carolinians Victoria Allred (Pfafftown)-Emilia Migliaccio (Cary) each registered 2-and-1 victories. Murphy-Moosa bested the team of Elizabeth Bose (Norfolk, Va.) and Khushboo Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va.), while Allred-Migliaccio defeated Delaney Shah (North Potomac, Md.) and Lauren Kim (Woodstock, Md.). Also for the Carolinas’ contingent, Sydney Legacy (Lexington, S.C.) and Cayla Smith (Easley, S.C.) notched a 5-and-4 triumph over Kristin Hearp (Salem, Va.)-Killian Casson (Ellicott City, Md.).
The event concludes with 12 singles matches on Sunday, July 28. Carolinas leads the all-time series, 8-2-1.
