99th Carolinas Amateur Championship Starts Thursday at The Ocean Course

99th AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE CAROLINAS GOLF ASSOCIATION HEADS THIS WEEK TO THE OCEAN COURSE AT KIAWAHISLAND

WEST END, NC - The Carolinas Amateur Championship, flagship event of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA), moves to The Ocean Course at KiawahIsland, site of last year’s PGA Championship, July 11-14.

The CGA received a record 777 entries, exceeding the previous total high of 550, established last year, by 41 percent.

The championship is open to male amateurs who are legal residents of either North Carolina or South Carolina, who are members in good standing of a CGA member club, who are at least 13 years old, and who have a current USGA Handicap Index of 5.4 or less at a CGA member club.

Carson Young, 18, from Pendleton, S.C. and recent high school graduate, returns to defend his title.  He defeated 2011 champion Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C., by two shots in last year’s event at Charlotte Country Club. Harvey also is entered.

The CGA conducted qualifying events for the Amateur at the CC of Spartanburg, Spartanburg, S.C.; Stoney Creek GC, Stoney Creek, N.C.; Cape Fear National GC, Leland, N.C.; Spring Valley CC, Columbia, S.C.; Mimosa Hills G&CC, Morganton, N.C.; The Club at Irish Creek, Kannapolis, N.C.; Brier Creek CC, Raleigh, N.C.; Shadowmoss Plantation GC, Charleston, S.C.; and Lake Marion GC, Santee, S.C.

The CGA previously held the 1995 South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at The Ocean Course, won by Bert Atkinson of Charleston.

Brainchild of Pete and Alice Dye on prime oceanfront property on KiawahIsland, The Ocean Course opened in 1991 to host the Ryder Cup, won in dramatic fashion by the U.S. team.  The course also was venue for the 1997 and 2003 World Cup of Golf, the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and last year’s PGA Championship.  It is famous for its capricious winds. Perennially ranked among the top public layouts in the country, the course will play at 7,066 yards (par 36-36—72) for the Carolinas Amateur.

FORMAT

The format was changed from match play to stroke play in 2010 and now consists of 72 holes over four days. A cut is made to the low 60 competitors and ties after 36 holes. The Capers Cup team competition is held in conjunction with the first two rounds. Three or four competitors from the same club comprise a team. The lowest three scores count each round. When more than four competitors from the same club are in the field, the lowest handicap indexes are used to determine the team.
