Freeman and Bentley take SC Junior Match Play medalist awards

Despite the best effort of South Carolina’s finest junior boys’ golfers, only one player managed to break par during the stroke play qualifying portion of the South Carolina Junior Match Play being played at Green Valley Country Club. Reed Bentley of Wellford, SC began his round on the 10th and set the tone early with a birdie on No. 11. “I wanted to go as low as I could and get a good seed for match play,” Bentley said. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 allowed one of last year’s semifinalists to get to three under. Bentley did not stop there, he collected yet another birdie on No. 18 to make the turn four-under-par. I hit fairways and greens all day,” Bentley said.
The front nine proved to be more of a challenge for Bentley but the highlight of his round came on the par-3 third when he, "chipped in for birdie, I hit a good shot and it worked out." Two consecutive bogeys o the following holes were not enough for Bentley to fall out of the medalist position. Bentley finished his round three-under-par, giving him a three stoke cushion on the rest of the field. The No. 2 seeds is content keeping the same plan heading into match play, "fairways and greens. That will drive them crazy." Defending champion Nick Willis of Cowpens, SC will begin his title defense as the No. 1 seed. Keegan Vaugh of Myrtle Beach, SC and Walker Jones of Sumter, SC each carded an even-par 72 to claim the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds respectively.
Anna Freeman of Aiken, SC and Anna Grace Brock of Greenwood, SC recorded the low rounds of the day for the Girls' Division, shooting a pair of 70's. The two headed to No. 10 to playoff for medalist honors. Freeman made par to secure the #1 overall seed for match play heading into Wednesday's round. "I didn't hit my driver very well today but I just stayed focused and I hit some really good iron shots and started making some putts." Going into match play as the #1 seed, Freeman is ready to go. "I like match play and I'm excited to play tomorrow. I'm feeling really confident." Carly Lyvers of Simpsonville also found red figures with a one-under-par 71, good enough for the No. 3 seed.
The Boys' Division will compete in a 64 person bracket July 20-22 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. The Girls Division will compete in a 16 person bracket over the same time span beginning at 11:30 am on Wednesday.
