Street-Borton Repeat at Mixed Team
Aubrie Street and Michael Borton successfully defended their Carolinas Mixed Team Championship title
PINEHURST, N.C. (August 21, 2016) -- Final results of the 11th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (No. 5) in Pinehurst, N.C. on Sunday, August 21st. (Par 36-36--72, various yardage)
A team of two Furman Paladins led after Saturday's first round of four-ball stroke play at the 11th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship on Course No. 5 at Pinehurst Resort. When play completed Sunday afternoon, a different team of two former Furman golfers claimed the victory. Defending champions Aubrie Street of Greenville, S.C. and Michael Borton of Winston-Salem, N.C. were able to erase a two stroke deficit during the modified alternate shot portion of the championship to earn back-to-back titles.

Just as they did last year, Street-Borton carded the low final round to overtake the leaders. "For the most part we both had balls in the fairway to choose from," said Street. On Sunday, each team member played from their respective tee and selected a ball to be played. Team members then alternate strokes until the ball is holed. "He was hitting his irons really well. I was getting in the fairway, he was hitting the shot, and I was giving it a run at birdie."
Two-over-par thru 12 holes, a long birdie putt by Borton on the par-3 13th started a barrage of three consecutive birdies. Another birdie on 17 helped close their two-under-par round and a two-day total of six-under. "We love this tournament," said Borton. "It's unlike any tournament we get to play. To go back-to-back was a lot of fun."
Seven-time Carolinas Mixed Team champions Anthony Adams and Debbie Adams of Asheville, N.C. had to settle for back-to-back runner-up finishes. Their two-day total of four-under 140 tied for second place with Treg Hallman and Savannah Hallman of Mount Pleasant, S.C. First round leaders Bryce Howell of Blythewood, S.C. and Valentina Romero of Greenville, S.C. posted a 75 on Sunday to finish T-4.
In the Senior Division, Leigh Coulter of Hopkins, S.C. and Ken Taylor of Columbia, S.C. fired an even-par round to claim a three stroke victory over first round leaders Jerry Sennett and Karen Sennett of Stanley, N.C. Pinehurst Country Club member Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C., - who recently won the Super Senior Women’s North & South, her sixth Putter Boy trophy - teamed with William Reynolds of Raleigh, N.C. to win the Tournament Division. Their two-day total of six-under tied for the low score of the championship. These divisions play a shorter course than the Championship Division.
The championship format consists of one round of four-ball stroke play followed by a final round of modified alternate shot. Entry is open to any team comprised of a male amateur and a female amateur golfer who have reached their 13th birthdays, who are legal residents of North Carolina or South Carolina, are members in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
