Liebler, Mitchell Lead Carolinas Mid-Am

First Round Results

DATAW ISLAND, S.C. (April 15, 2016) -- First round results of the 36th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship held on Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dike Course in Dataw Island, S.C. on Friday, April 15, 2016. Par 36-36--72, 6,659 yards (Course Rating: 72.6/136).

57-year-old Steve Liebler of Irmo, S.C.
holds a share of the first round lead.

The 6,659 yard, par-72 course showed its teeth as rain and wind gusts exceeded 30 mph on the day. Dataw Island Club member Patrick Mitchell of Beaufort, S.C. posted three-under-par 69 for a share of the first round lead.

"I just hit fairways,"  recounted the 33-year-old Mitchell, who only missed four on the day. After an opening bogey on the short first hole, he said the key to his round came when his tee shot landed in the marsh on the par-4 6th. Chipping out, he was able to get up and down to avoid another bogey.

Mitchell's goal entering the first round was to shoot even par. With a 20-day-old baby boy at home, he has not had much time for practice. "I am very surprised and happy to be where I am after the first day," Mitchell said with a smile.

Co-leader Steve Liebler of Irmo, S.C. bested the wind to hit Cotton Dike's greens.  "I wasn't driving the ball that well today, but I hit 16 greens, so I gave myself a lot of birdie chances," said the 57-year-old who won this event in 2010. "[That year] I beat Paul Simson, also Scott Harvey was coming onto the amateur scene ... whenever you win a major championship of the biggest golf association in the country it means a lot."

On Friday both Liebler and Mitchell made five birdies and two bogeys. The way they entered into the championship was different. Mitchell earned his way to the championship through a qualifier run by host site Dataw Island Club. Liebler was exempt from qualifying by virtue of his 2010 Carolinas Mid-Amateur win and his run to the semi-finals of last year's U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

Two-time Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. made Friday's highlight reel by holing for eagle from 94 yards on Cotton Dike's first hole. Mixing two birdies with four bogeys puts Harvey at even par, three shots off the leaders. Defending champion Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. is T-20 at three-over-par 75.

The second round will begin at 8:00am from the 1st and 10th tees. Tee times & Pairings

The Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 30th birthday by April 15, 2016, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 7.4.
