Petersen & Smith Win Dogwood
The final round of the Dogwood State Junior Championship featured 18 girls that made the 36 hole cut. Four girls held a share of the lead at some point during the wild final round. Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, N.C. started the round with a lead one stroke lead but by the time she got to the 10th tee Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. and Rachel Kuehn of Ashville, N.C. had joined her at the top of the leaderboard. “I thought I was tied at the turn so I knew I had to get it going on the back side,” Petersen said. Kuehn made birdie on No. 10 to take sole possession of the lead. Another birdie on No. 14 gave the rising sophomore a two stroke lead. Meanwhile, a steady dose of pars allowed Petersen to continue applying pressure. Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. birdied No. 11 to enter the conversation. Kuehn stumbled down the stretch while Petersen and Hawkins could not get a birdie putt to drop, leaving the three girls tied heading to the 54th hole. Kuehn was in the group ahead and made par on the par-5 18th. Hawkins’ approach caught the left edge of the green while Petersen managed to leave herself just eight feet for birdie from the rough, “I got a little lucky there. I thought that was headed for the bunker but it turned out alright,” Petersen said as she approached the green. Hawkins was unable to convert her birdie putt, leaving the door open for Petersen. The Georgia Southern commit calmly rolled in her birdie putt to claim her first CGA Championship at seven-over-par 223. “I have never won a CGA event before so it was great to finish it out with a birdie,” Petersen said after the victory.
Fulton Smith of Pinehurst entered the final round with a one stroke lead over Matthew Sharpstene of Asheville. Before last weekend the two juniors were essentially strangers, but a weekend spent representing the Carolinas in the team matches changed that. “I did not know Matt that well but then we became good friends at the team matches which made today a lot of fun, Smith said. The teammates began to separate themselves from the field despite struggling on the front nine. “I could not get any momentum going and I heard some other guys were going low so I knew I needed to come through on the back,” Smith said. Smith did just that, making back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to get to seven-under-par. “I started honing in with my irons to give myself some looks that I actually converted,” Smith said. Sharpsetene matched Smith’s birdie on No. 14 to stay within shouting distance. A flyer from the rough on No. 17 for the West Virginia commit led to a bogey giving Smith more room to breathe. Sharpstene, one of the longest players in the state, thought long and hard about going for the 618 yard par-5 18th in two but elected to lay up. Smith hooked his tee shot but recovered nicely to leave him in a great position. Sharpsetene seemed out of it when he flew his approach over the green and Smith landed his on the left side of the green, but the rising senior would not go quietly. Sharpstene chipped in for birdie in front of a large audience of his peers. However, it was the rising sophomore’s time in the spotlight. An excellent lag putt allowed Smith to tap in for par and his first CGA Championship, finishing at seven-under-par 209, three shots clear of the field. “It is awesome to win this. This win gives me a ton of confidence going forward. I am beyond words right now, it is just awesome,” the excited Smith said after his victory. Bryson Boyette of Wilson, N.C. had the low round of the day firing a five-under-par 67 to jump into fourth place.
