Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C. became the 10th woman to win |
Last year, Davidson, N.C. native Katie Kirk needed a dramatic birdie on the final hole to secure a one stroke victory. In this year's edition of the Carolinas Women's Amateur, her tap-in bogey on the 54th hole was good enough to win by two strokes over Sarah Bae of Pinehurst, N.C.
Two weeks ago, Kirk graduated from East Carolina University. This week, with a three-day total of one-under par 215, the 22-year-old became just the 10th woman to win back-to-back Carolinas Women's Amateur titles.
"I thought it was a dream come true to win last year," said Kirk. "To win this year and defend, I'm speechless." Over the next two years Kirk will pursue a Master's degree in Economics and Math.
Playing the final round with a two-shot advantage, Kirk started par-birdie but then hit her tee shot on the 3rd hole into a creek. A bogey on that hole, followed by double-bogey, bogey on the next two holes put Kirk three-over par on her round.
"It could have been a turning point and everything could have gone downhill," Kirk recalled. "I just tried to remind myself to win every shot and give myself some chances."
Kirk quickly erased those mistakes with birdies on holes 6 and 8. When her group made the turn, precipitation that started as a light mist changed to a full downpour. Kirk was able to play steady in the foul weather, with a stretch of nine pars in a row on holes 9 thru 17. Her bogey on 18 capped a two-over par final round.
The closest competition came from first round leader Sarah Bae of Pinehurst, N.C. Overcoming a four-over par second round, on Thursday the 20-year-old mixed three birdies with three bogeys for even par. Her three-day total of two-over par, 69-76-72--217, awarded her runner-up honors.
After holing five birdies in the second round to post one-under 71, Lori Beth Adams of Burlington, N.C. added six more birdies. Her two-under par 70 was the final round low, climbing the leaderboard into a solo third place finish at two-over par 218. On Monday, the 23-year-old Adams was medalist at a 36 hole qualifier in Pennsylvania for the 2015 U.S. Women's Open.

2011 N.C. Women's Senior champ, Dr. Angela Stewart, 60, of Greenville, N.C. won the senior division (age 50+) by two strokes over Brenda Corrie Kuehn, 50, of Asheville, N.C.
The super senior division (age 65+) was decided by one stroke with seventy-year-old Carole Jones of Hillsborough, N.C. edging Clate Aydlett, 73, of Elizabeth City, N.C.
For the third consecutive year, Melissa Sage, 62, of Charlotte, N.C. won the Carolinas division. This division plays a shorter set of tees than the Championship. Sage followed-up a pair of 77s with an 83 to win by four at a three-day total of 237.
Players were placed into flights within their division for the final round.
This championship is the premier stroke play event for women from around the Carolinas (North and South Carolina) and is open to all CGA women members from all ages and abilities. This is the most historic women’s amateur championship in the Carolinas which was first conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association in 1922. The Women’s Carolinas Golf Association turned over the responsibilities of their association and this championship over to the Carolinas Golf Association back in 2012.
The CGA would like to thank the staff and members of Treyburn Country Club for their hospitality and assistance running this championship.
The 90th Carolinas Women's Amateur will be held May 16-18, 2016 at The Reserve Club in Pawley's Island, SC. Entry into the Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.
