Bae's Birdie Binge at Car Women's Am

Birdies were the story of the first round. In a day where a total of 112 were made, Sarah Bae, 20, of Pinehurst, N.C. accounted for seven of them. A bogey on her opening hole did not discourage Bae. She made back-to-back birdies on holes 6 and 7 to get into red numbers. Birdies on three of her final four holes capped a three-under par 69.

When the Carolinas Women's Amateur was last held at Treyburn Country Club in 2013, Bae, a three-time N.C. Junior Player of the Year (2010,'11,'12), finished T-3 at even par overall.

Defending champion Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C. sits in a tie for third place. "I'm happy with how I played today. You can't win it in a day, but you could lose it," Kirk said after her four birdie, three bogey opening round 71. "This is one of my favorite tournaments, so I would like to come back and win again." Kirk tied for seventh when the championship was played at Treyburn in 2013.

L ast year's one stroke defeat had an effect on runner-up Bailey Cocca of Myrtle Beach, S.C. "It motivated me not to baby anything," said Cocca. "There is a short par-4 where I would normally not hit driver. But today I did and wound up right alongside the green." Her aggressive playing style paid off with four birdies. Cocca was second round medalist last year at Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C. but lost by one when Kirk birdied the final hole. This year, Cocca is alone in second place at two-under par 70 after the first day.

The Overall Champion and the Senior Champion (age 50+) will be determined from the contestants playing in the Championship Division. 17-time CGA champion, Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C. leads the Senior division with a three-over par 75. The Super Senior Champion (age 65+) will be determined from contestants playing in the Carolinas Division. Cynthia Curry of Charlotte, N.C., last year's Super Senior champion, leads again this year after a four-over par 76 in the first round. This division plays a shorter course.

Players will be placed into flights within their division following the second round of play which begins at 8:30am of #1 and #10 tee.

This championship is the premier stroke play event for women from around the Carolinas (North and South Carolina) and is open to all CGA women members from all ages and abilities. This is the most historic women’s amateur championship in the Carolinas which was first conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association in 1922. The Women’s Carolinas Golf Association turned over the responsibilities of their association and this championship over to the Carolinas Golf Association back in 2012.

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to play in the "Championship Division" or the "Carolinas Division".  A tie for Overall Champion, Senior Champion and Super Senior Champion is determined by an on-course playoff. Prizes and merchandise are awarded to the Overall Champion, Senior Champion and Super Senior Champion. Merchandise is awarded to winners in each flight. A medalist award is given to the low scorer in each division after 36 holes of play.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by May 19, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.
