NEWTON, N.C. -- First round results of the 38th Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association at Catawba Country Club in Newton, N.C. on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 (5900 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating: 74.4/132).
A pair of collegiate golfers, Jaelyn Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. and Maddisen Cox of Easley, S.C. carded an opening round 66.
"We each made three birdies," said 19-year-old Cox, who plays for James Madison University. "It was just solid. Anytime she needed me to pick her up, I did. Anytime I needed her to pick me up, she did." 17-year-old Tindal, last year's SC Junior Girls' Player of the Year, will join Mercer University's golf team this fall.
Starting on hole 10, the duo heated up on their closing nine, recording four of their six birdies on the front nine at Catawba Country Club. They hold a one shot lead over University of North Carolina golfer Rachel Jones of Asheboro, N.C. and Catawba College's Alexis Kershaw of Winston-Salem, N.C.
Defending champions Hayley Hammond of Mooresville, N.C. and Lea Venable of Simpsonville, N.C. are six shots back of the lead after a two birdie, two bogey, even par 72.
Becca McKinney of Raleigh, N.C. made a hole-in-one on 133 yard par-3 13th. McKinney, with partner Jo Ann Sluder of Pinehurst, N.C. lead the tournament division by three after a three-under 69. The tournament division plays a shorter course.
The final round will begin with a 9:00am shotgun start on Wednesday.
