Preview: 15th North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- 70 teams from across North Carolina will compete at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro for the 15th North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) from Wednesday, August 12 through Friday, August 14.
The course at Pinewood Country Club was designed and built in 1971 by Russell F. Breedon. It is currently ranked 65th in the state of North Carolina and was also named the #1 Hidden Gem among all golf course in the Piedmont Triad Area. This will be the first time Pinewood Country Club has hosted the North Carolina Senior Four-Ball and sixth CGA Championship.
Five notable teams in the field for the 15th North Carolina Senior Four Ball Championship:
• 3-Time CGA champion Russ Perry of Winston Salem and 2-time CGA champion Mark Stephens of Troutman are returning to defend their title as the N.C. Senior Four-Ball champions.
• 29-time CGA champion Paul Simson & 5-time CGA champion Don Detweiler of Raleigh, won in 2009 and 2013, finished second in 2014, and are looking to be the first team to win three N.C. Senior Four-Ball Championship.
• 2-time CGA champion Gary Brown of Charlotte and 4-time CGA Champion Ron Carpenter of Creedmore, are once again competing and hoping to win their second N.C. Senior Four-Ball Championship. They previously won the championship in 2011 and finished second in 2012.
• 3-time CGA champion Logan Jackson of Winston Salem and 3-time CGA champion David Strawn of Charlotte - who won the championship in 2005, 2007, and 2008 - are competing once again in hopes of becoming the first team to ever in the N.C. Senior Four-Ball Championship three times.
• 5-time CGA Champion Jim Grainger of Charlotte, won the N.C. Senior Four-Ball in 2012 and finished second in 2013 is returning with a new partner, John Rudolph of Charlotte.
Tournament Information:
Eligibility: Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by August 12, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
Format: The championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 30 scores and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff.
Scoring Record: 191 by Woody Greene of Linville and David Strawn of Charlotte at Greenville CC in 2005.
Most Titles: David Strawn has 3 titles with two different partners (2005 with Woody Greene; 2007-08 with Logan Jackson).
