After just six players broke par in the first round, morning winds gusting 15-25 miles per hour did not ease today's scoring conditions. Only two players played better than par all day, with the overall scoring average of 78 a half-stroke higher than yesterday.
One of those in red numbers was Jim Grainger, 58, of Charlotte. Grainger, who collected his fifth overall CGA title two weeks ago at the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball, made four birdies en route to two-under par 69. The highlight came at the 196 yard, downhill par-3 9th, which ranked most difficult. "I made a bomb," said Grainger. "I hit it on the front of the green ... the pin position was back right. If [my putt] hadn't hit the hole, it was probably going off the green. So I was lucky there."
Grainger is the only player in the field to play both rounds under par. Combined with his first round 70, he commands a five-stroke advantage atop the leaderboard at three-under-par 139. A win tomorrow would secure Grainger's second individual CGA victory (2014 Carolinas Senior Am).
Brian Reep, 55, of Morganton matched Grainger's round of the day to climb into a tie for seventh at 146.
First round leader Pat Thompson, 56, of nearby Asheville followed-up his 68 with five bogeys and a double-bogey to post five-over-par 76. He and Robby Kirby, 55, of Charlotte are tied in second place at 144, trailing Grainger by five strokes.
28-time CGA champion Paul Simson, 64, of Raleigh double-bogeyed the 9th and triple-bogeyed the par-5 13th, leading to a six-over-par 77. He is tied for fourteenth with a two-day total of 147.
Two players made aces on Champion Hills Club in the second round. Roy Greene of Waynesville made his seventh career hole-in-one at the 178 yard 11th hole with a 6-iron. Using an 8-iron at the 140 yard 2nd hole, Rick LaFata of Raleigh made his fourth career ace.
Defending champion Jim Pearson of Charlotte is recovering from surgery.
68 players made the 36 hole cut at 14-over-par 156. Final round tee times will begin from the 1st and 10th tees at 8am with the leaders starting at 9:50am.
The North Carolina Amateur Championship is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by May 12, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 10.4.
