After navigating Tuesday's stroke play qualifying round, 64 junior golfers competed Wednesday against each other and 95-degree temperatures. Match play winners complete two rounds per day for three straight days before a champion is crowned. "The format is the hardest tournament to win in North Carolina for junior boys," says Jason Cox, CGA Director of Junior Golf.
With the rounds of 64 and 32 complete, the match play portion of the championship continues Thursday with the Round of 16 and quarterfinals. The semifinal and final rounds are scheduled to be played Friday, with the championship match contested Friday afternoon.
Round of 64:
Ten of the opening 32 matches progressed to the 18th hole. Three other matches needed extra holes before a winner was decided.
There were only seven first round upsets. One of the notable defeats was CC of Salisbury junior club champion Michael Childress of Salisbury falling to Alex Scott of Raleigh 1 up.
Round of 32:
As close as the morning matches were, the afternoon saw more decisive victories.
Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury, a semifinalist in last year's championship contested at Roaring Gap Club made six birdies and an eagle in his 7 & 6 victory over Patrick Carlin of Raleigh. Lyerly was seven-under-par thru the 12 holes the match lasted, capping the victory by hitting his second shot on 535 yard par-5 3rd hole to three feet for eagle.
No. 3 seed Patrick Stephenson of Four Oaks, who won the TYGA Bojangles Junior earlier this month, battled No. 30 Walker Simas of Charlotte, the runner-up at this year's Creed Boys' Invitational. Walker made four birdies and an eagle to win the match 4 & 2. "I did a good job of making sure I put myself in the right places and giving myself putts," said 17-year-old Simas who has verbally committed to Wofford College. When asked which part of his game has to improve for him to win the championship, he replied, "I got to work on my 3-wood too because I had a couple issues this week but everything past that's looking good. Going to keep the same game plan for tomorrow."
Stephenson felt good about how he played, despite the loss. "I was hitting it pretty solid. I was making a lot of pars but never anything too close on the front." The East Carolina University commit felt like he lost a few holes on the putting green. "I was hitting it to 15-20 ft. every time and hit putts that looked pretty good, but they just weren't quite dropping."
No. 4 seed Logan Shuping of Salisbury fell to Jack Brea of Charlotte 3 & 2.
Round of 16 matches will begin Thursday morning at 8:00am.
