CGA Interclub Final Four Field Set
2015 Interclub Regular Season and Playoff Update as of November 9:
Playoffs
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- The “Final 4” field is set. The two remaining quarterfinal matches played Sunday resulted in Pinehurst Country Club #1-6 defeating Mountain Aire GC (West Jefferson, NC) 11-7 while Rock Hill Country Club took down Tega Cay GC#1 (Tega Cay, SC) 12 to 6.
Pinehurst Country Club #1-6 will now face Umstead Pines Golf Club next Saturday and Rock Hill Country Club will battle River Hills Country Club. Both semi-final matches will be played in the morning on the East course at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
NORTH Region (Elite 8):
With a convincing 11-7 win over Mountain Aire GC from West Jefferson, NC, the #1-6 Pinehurst CC team is headed to the CGA Interclub Championship Final Four!
Pinehurst came out on top with a strong 7-2 win on the No. 6 course and scored 4 of the possible 9 points at Mountain Aire.
Despite light rain throughout much of the day, the home squad dominated with clean sweeps by the team of Steve Robinson/Jim Koch and Steve Tucker/Larry Townsend with the latter team firing five birdies to power their wins. Dave Kelley won the final point, and with a gutty performance from partner Pet Moss, took their opponents to the 18th hole before surrendering that point.
By the time the home matches were over the road team was just starting to finish.
In the first match Ernie Ferrel fired a 77 to beat Randall Scott 4&2. Partner Dave Hampton, despite losing the individual point to Kevin Howell, parred the 18th to halve the four-ball match. Pinehurst now led 8.5 to 3.5 and needed a half point to get into a playoff and one point to clinch.
Mike McKitrick overcame at strong 75 from Anthony Hamilton to pull out a ½ point and ensure at least a tie. That brought it down to the last team of Anthony Cordes & Martin Huff. The players back at No. 6 had to wait for the cellphone call to learn the final results. Following a 5 minute search for a lost ball on 18, Cordes and Huff came through with a 2 to 1 win
PCC now advances to play Umstead Pines GC in one semi-final match. The winner will face the survivor of the South Bracket match between Rock Hill CC and River Hills CC. All matches will take place November 14 and 15 at Greensboro's Grandover Resort (East Course) which has hosted, NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Regional Championships, 2012 Nationwide Tour Open Qualifier and a NCAA Division 3 Men’s Golf National Championship
The Pinehurst Team consists of 25 different members and two club professionals that have played in 10 events since May, including three consecutive sudden death playoff wins this Fall in our first ever playoff appearance.
SOUTH Region (Elite 8):
On the other side of the bracket, Rock Hill CC stopped Tega Cay #1 from making what would have been their first final four appearance as they won a total of 12 match points to Tega Cay’s 6.
At Tega Cay, Ken Gallentine and Ed Luczak led off for Rock Hill with a 3 point sweep over Jim Rafferty and Randall Phillips. Teammates Bill Warren and Tom Royston followed with a 2½ to ½ performance. Dennis Lacher halved his match with Royston to give Tega Cay a ½ point. In the final pairing, Tega Cay’s Jason Tannenbaum and John Cunningham swept their opponents with rounds of 72 and 73 respectively in wet conditions for a final score of 5½ to 3½.
At Rock Hill CC, all three home teams (Britt Stamper with Drew Jackson, Kevin Sutton & Bill Gladden, and Miles Curley with Steve Smyth) won 2, 2 and 2½ points respectively. Curley defeated Jason Hnat for the individual point as both players posted 71’s in the process. Ryan and dale Fandel led Tega Cay with individual wins.
Rock Hill won this championship in 2009 and will face a three time Interclub champion River Hills CC in next Saturday’s other semi-final match.
