Henry Shimp of Charlotte, NC successfully defended |
On Thursday at Forest Oaks Country Club, Carolinas Junior defending champion Henry Shimp accomplished what he could not 18 days ago in the final round of the Carolinas Amateur, hold on for the victory.
"I kind of sat back and thought about the things I did well and did not do well in that round," the 18-year-old Shimp reflected. "I tried to work on those things out there today. I tried to be more patient and calm, focus on each shot. I played a lot better than I did in that round [at the Carolinas Am]."
The Charlotte native used his length off the tee to his advantage, reaching four of the par-5s in two shots, resulting in four birdies. Shimp drilled a 3-wood from 285 yards to 30 feet on the par-5 11th. "It was probably my best shot on the back nine. I hit that one right at the flag."
A 12-foot birdie putt on the par-4 9th and a bogey on No. 15 culminated a four-under 68 final round, good for a three-shot victory. "I was hoping to get to 209 [7-under]," said Shimp. "I thought if I did that and someone beat me, then so be it. So I was happy to get to 8-under 208."
Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury, N.C. and Christian Salzer of Sumter, S.C. made a final round charge, both finishing at five-under 211. That meant Shimp had a two shot lead playing the par-5 18th. From the left-side rough, he hit a 227 yard 4-iron to 25 feet. Another two putt birdie sealed the victory for Shimp.
The co-leader with Shimp heading into the final round was 15-year-old AJ Beechler of Pinehurst, N.C. The rising sophomore struggled early, making three bogeys in his first six holes en route to a one-over 73. Beechler finished T-5 with a three-day total of 213.
With the back-to-back win, Shimp becomes just the 6th Carolinian to win consecutive Carolinas Junior titles. "It's been a goal of mine this year to come back and win," he commented. "I think it's a little harder the second time to come back and win because you are thinking about it more, it puts a little bit more pressure on you."
To have a chance at a three-peat, next year's championship will have to end by July 25, when Shimp will celebrate his 19th birthday. On Thursday in Greensboro, he was just enjoying the moment. "To go out today and be calm and play well and end up getting it done was pretty awesome."
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by July 30, 2015, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.
