Dataw Island Club to Host 37th Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship on August 11-12
WEST END, NC (8/7/14) -- The Carolinas Golf Association announces the 37th Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship at Dataw Island Club (Cotton Dike) in Dataw Island, SC on August 11-12, 2014.
27 teams are entered in this year's championship. Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by August11, 2014, is a legal resident of the North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club.
The championship format is contested at 36 holes of four-ball stroke play with a Championship division and a Tournament division. Gross scores only. Teams have the option to compete in either the Championship division or the Tournament division. Tournament division plays a shorter course and is ineligible for the overall championship. The field will be pre-flighted by total team handicap index. Team handicap index is computed by adding 2/3 of the lower handicap index to 1/3 of the higher handicap index.
A series of dikes, created to generate more planting ground for 18th century plantation cotton fields, influenced the Cotton Dike course by Tom Fazio. Fazio is one of the country's finest golf course designers known for his waterfront challenges. Jenkins Creek flows by nearly half of the 18 holes, between emerald fields and fairways. For more than three decades, Tom Fazio and his design staff have created award-winning courses throughout the United States. His Dataw creation puts a premium on a players imagination.
From a playability standpoint, Fazio says, the seventh hole offers numerous options as a three-shot hole or as a reachable par-five for long hitters, and if the golfer avoids the forest on the right and the lagoons on the left, a birdie is a distinct possibility. In 2011 the Cotton Dike course was completely renovated and now plays better than ever. As a result of this thoughtful renovation, It has retained its place as one of the Lowcountys finest courses. Dataw Island Club has previously hosted the 2013 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship.
Two teams hold the record for the lowest total of 129:
Amber Marsh and Page Marsh of Jamestown, NC at the CC of South Carolina in Florence, SC (1996).
Blythe Worley, Greenville, SC and Laura Crawford, Lancaster, SC at Seabrook Island Club (Ocean Course) in Seabrook Island, SC (2006).
The most Carolinas Women's Four-Ball titles won by any team is three which belongs to two teams:
Linda Marsh and Page Marsh of Jamestown, NC in 1982, 1984, 1985;
Leigh Armentrout of McLeansville, NC and Vicki Layton of Greensboro, NC in 1987, 1989 and 1990.
In the 2013 Women's Four-Ball championship, Maureen Dunnagan and Kathryn Miranda of Lexington, SC converted a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture their first Carolinas Womens Four-Ball title.
