CGA Announces 100th Carolinas Amateur Championship
WEST END, NC (7/7/14) -- The 100th Carolinas Amateur Championship will be held at the Greenville Country Club (Chanticleer) in Greenville, SC on July 10-13, 2014.
This year marks the 100th playing of the Carolinas Amateur Championship. The championship was first played in 1910 at Sans Souci Country Club in Greenville, SC which is now known as Greenville Country Club. Berrien Brooks of Columbia, SC defeated F.M. Laxton of Charlotte, NC, 2 and 1 to win the inaugural event. The championship was not played in 1917-18 due to World War I and from 1943-45 due to World War II. The CGA is proud to return our flagship championship back to its birthplace.

Each decade has brought forth the "best of the best" in amateur play. Past champions have come from all walks in life. Old and young, fathers and sons, collegiate champions, weekend warriors, and future professionals have all won the championship.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by July 10, 2014, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4. Exempt players were accepted into the championship at the time of entry.
149 players are entered into this year's Championship. Non-exempt players gained entry into the championship proper through sectional qualifying. Sectional qualifiers were held at Bermuda Run CC (East), Bermuda Run, NC (June 17); Wescott Golf Club (Burn Kill/Black Robin), Summerville, SC (June 18); Lonnie Poole GC at NC State, Raleigh, NC (June 24); Mimosa Hills Golf & CC, Morganton, NC (June 26); Spring Valley CC, Columbia, SC (June 26); St. James Plantation (Founders), Southport, NC (June 28); Cabarrus CC, Concord, NC (June 30); and The Carolina Country Club, Spartanburg, SC (July 1).

The championship is conducted at 72 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final two rounds. An on-course play-off is used to break a tie for the championship. Champion receives a trophy and merchandise from host club. Top 30 scores will receive merchandise and are exempt into the 2015 Carolinas Amateur Championship.
The Carolinas Amateur Championship returns to Greenville Country Club for the first time since 2005. When last contested at Greenville CC, all-time CGA Champion Paul Simson, Raleigh, NC won his second Carolinas Amateur championship by a score of 6 & 5 over Dustin Barr of Mooresville, NC. The Carolinas Amateur Championship converted from a match play format to a stroke play format in 2010. The club has previously hosted the Carolinas Amateur Championship a total of 6 times (1910, 25, 37, 72, 77, 2005). In addition, Greenville CC (Chanticleer) has been the site for the 1971 Carolinas Junior; 1973 & 1989 Carolinas Senior; 1980, 81, 83, 85, 87 South Carolina Amateur Match Play; 1996, 2008 Carolinas Mid-Amateur; 1990 Carolinas Pro-Amateur; and the 1973 Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches.
This is great occasion for the Carolinas Golf Association and Greenville Country Club, said CGA President and GCC member Jackson Hughes. Both groups have come a long way and have been instrumental in developing golf in the Carolinas for the last century. I am glad to be a part of both organizations.
Greenville Country Club is one of the South's most historic country clubs. Founded in 1905, the club features two championship 18-hole golf courses - Chanticleer designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Riverside, a Donald Ross design recently redesigned by Brian Silva. The Chanticleer Course has been consistently ranked as the top course in Upstate South Carolina. Affectionately known as the longest 6,900 yards in America, the par 72 layout is privately situated as a golf-only facility. The course offers one of the most beautiful and challenging golf opportunities available anywhere. Rolling fairways, towering hardwoods and pines, pure white sand, gently flowing creeks, and some of the most challenging greens in the nation combine to make Chanticleer one of the most memorable experiences in the U.S. for even the best golfers. The course has an impressive slope of 155 and course rating of 75.1 from the tips with water and or/out of bounds on 17 of the 18 holes.
100th Carolinas Amateur Championship Celebration Gathering
Greenville Country Club and the Carolinas Golf Association will host a social gathering to celebrate the 100th Carolinas Amateur Championship for all championship participants and their guests on Wednesday, July 9 from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the Greenville Country Club Riverside clubhouse.
Capers Cup Club Team Competition
The Capers Cup competition is held during rounds one and two of the championship proper. Three or four bona fide members from the same club comprise a team. The low three scores count each round. The team from River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC won the 2013 event with a two-day total of 454. Winning team members were William Gordon of Davidson, NC, Clay Brown of Davidson, NC, Steve Harwell of Mooresville, NC and Spencer Lawson of Davidson, NC.
In 2013, Carter Jenkins of Raleigh, NC, celebrated his 18th birthday by winning the 99th Carolinas Amateur at the very challenging The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, SC. Jenkins finished at even par for the championship playing each day in ocean winds and rain-threatening skies. Now a rising sophomore at UNC-Greensboro, Carter is returning to defend his title.
The qualifying rounds have brought to the forefront a new generation of anxious and talented young players ready to vie for the title. Qualifying medalists to watch for include: Davis Womble, High Point, NC (Lonnie Poole); Rich Bundschuh, Charleston, SC and Julian Keur, Summerville, SC (Wescott Golf Club); Ben O'Geary, Henderson, NC and Isaac Spencer, Winston-Salem, NC (Bermuda Run CC); Bryce Howell, Blythewood, SC (Spring Valley CC); Al Dickens IV, Charlotte, NC (Mimosa Hills GC); Jackson Spires, Fayetteville, NC (St. James Plantation); Danny Pizetoski, Davidson, NC (Cabarrus CC); and Seth Gandy, Huntersville, NC (The Carolina CC).
Despite the influx of new, young talent, there are plenty of veteran winners in the field who want to lay claim to the 100th Championship. Entered into this year's championship are: 2011 Champion and three-time CGA Player of the Year Scott Harvey, Greensboro, NC; 2012 Champion Carson Young, Pendleton, SC; 2010 Champion Logan Harrell, Huntersville, NC; 2014 Carolinas Mid-Am Champion Matthew Crenshaw, Burlington, NC; 2013 Senior Player of the Year and Carolinas Senior Champion in 2012 and 2013 Rick Cloninger, Ft. Mill, SC; All-time CGA Champion (27 championships) Paul Simson; and 2013 Carolinas Amateur runner-up Miller Capps, Denver, NC.
