Carter Jenkins Wins the 99th Carolinas Amateur Championship
KIAWAH ISLAND, SC – Final round results of the 99th Carolinas Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, SC on Sunday, July 14, 2013 (7066 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.9/141).
After 72 holes and five separate weather delays through the four day event no player was able to break par on the world famous Pete Dye designed The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, SC. Carter Jenkins of Raleigh, NC finished the championship at even par 288 which was one shot clear of Miller Capps of Denver, NC.
Round four of the 99th Carolinas Amateur Championship got off to a slow start this morning. Original starting times of 8:00am were pushed back 4 times due to severe weather and wind conditions. Finally, a clear weather window opened up and the tournament started with a shotgun at 11:00am. Wind was still a factor for much of the first six holes. At 1:00pm another strong weather cell popped up on the radar and the players were called in from the course one more time.
The suspension
lasted for one hour and play then resumed under sunny skies and slightly calmer
winds. Third round leader Jarrett Swan had a few tough opening holes and was
six-over for the day when play resumed. At the same time Carter Jenkins,
The lead went back and forth for a few holes until Claytor ran into trouble on the 12th hole when his approach shot ran across the green and caromed into deep rough just beyond the green. Claytor hit a great shot onto the green; however, a rare three putt resulted in a double bogey six. Meanwhile, Jenkins had found his groove and was placing his tee shots in the middle of the fairway and approach shots in tight to the pin.
Jenkins, playing on his 18th birthday, bogeyed the 18th hole but still scored well enough to win the 2013 Carolinas Amateur Championship. “I was playing for the ball to check up on the green since I was hitting into a stiff wind with a low spinning shot, “ said Jenkins about his approach shot. “No one was more surprised than me when it ran off the green.”
It was a special win for Jenkins, now a four-time CGA Champion and rising freshman at UNC-Greensboro, with his father caddying and his mother following in the gallery. “I am particularly proud to win this tournament, especially at the same location as the PGA Championship last year.” When told the hole locations for the final round were the same as the Sunday locations for the PGA, Jenkins was impressed and surprised. “My Dad and I talked about the locations on the course and wondered why they were all tucked away so tightly. Now we know why. That was really cool,” remarked Jenkins.
