(January 2, 2019) – The Carolinas Golf Association’s 2019 championship season gets an early start with the 10th Carolinas Young Amateur to be held January 3-4, 2019 on the Magnolia Course at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. The tournament format is 36 holes of stroke play for male and female amateur golfers ages 18 to 25 who have finished high school and have a current USGA handicap Index at a CGA member club. Lauren Stephenson is hands down one of the best amateur golfers, male or female, to come out of the Carolinas. In 2018, she was named the Golfweek Player of the Year, represented the U.S. on the Curtis Cup and Palmer Cup teams and won the Golfstat Cup as the nation’s leading scorer with a 69.76 average for the season.

Her list of remarkable amateur achievements go back to her junior days, but that chapter of her life is now officially over.

The Carolinas Golf Association is saddened to learn the news of the passing of Lewis Dean Cassell. Cassell was inducted in the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame in 2016 alongside Johnny Harris.

Cassell of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts and Charlotte, North Carolina passed away at his Dartmouth home on September 5, 2018 at the age of 90 years.
