Wotnosky Wins the NC Junior Boys' 14 and Under

 

ASHEBORO, N.C. (July 7, 2021) -- Final round results of the 24th N.C. Junior Boys’ 14 and Under Championship at Asheboro City Golf Course in Asheboro, N.C. from July 6-7, 2021. The field competed from a mix of the blue and red tees that play 5,898 yards, par 70.

Davis Wotnosky of Wake Forest hoists the trophy at the 24th NC Junior Boys’ 14 and Under on Wednesday at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course. John John Santospago of Charlotte is the runner-up, Caedmon Albertyn of Matthews and Luke Tisdale of Winston - Salem finish tied for third. 

 

After signing off on what Wotnosky noted as a “boring” round on Tuesday, he would sit at 1-over-par, two-strokes behind the first round leaders; Santospago and David Gee of Hickory. Placed behind the final pairing on Wednesday, Wotnosky knew he had to go low in order to secure the bag, that is the Stitch CGA 2021 champions bag given to every champion this calendar year. 

 

“[Winning the Championship] feels pretty good,” the newly minted CGA champion said. “ This is only my second time playing in a boys championship. I played this event last year and I did not even make it to the top flight. I came here coming off some pretty good wins recently and I just qualified for the US Junior a couple weeks ago. I came here with high hopes. It feels really good to get my picture on the CGA website.”

 

Wotnoskys’ final round did not get off to the adroit start he had dreamt of. He played his outward nine in the same 2-over-par, 37  fashion he did the day prior. However, this time he recouped from a bad break on No.8 that resulted in a double - bogey. 

 

Before making the turn, or the second loop at the original nine hole Donald Ross design, Wotnosky was 1-over-par for the tournament and part of a massive 6-way tie for the top spot. He would make par after par, maintaining his score but not separating himself from the rest of the competition until the par-3, sixteenth hole. 

 

Wotnosky said he liked this 134 yard hole a little bit more than the others at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course, as he had received one of his four birdies on 16 the day before. Similarly Wotnosky found success on No.16 yet again on Wednesday, but Wednesdays’ birdie was extra momentous because it secured his first CGA title. 

 

“I got to the tee box on No.16 and told myself I need at least one birdie to maybe get into a playoff or maybe sneak in a win,” Wotnosky said after his round. “I landed my tee shot perfectly pin-high but it rolled back to about 30 feet and I got a perfect read and snuck it in the right edge for a birdie. I was really pumped when I made that. I knew I needed something because Santospago never goes down without a fight.”

 

Wotnosky bested the field with a score of even-par, 140 total, Santospago fired off a 1-over-par, 141 total, while third place finishers Albertyn and Tisdale signed off on 4-over-par, 144’s.

 

After saying his thank you’s to his parents and his competitors he added that he will in fact be “ eating some ice cream for sure.”

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
