Wilfong Takes Early Lead at NC Amateur
2001 N.C. Amateur Champion, Chad Wilfong, takes the early lead after an opening round of 4-under, 66.

It’s been 18 years since Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. won the North Carolina Amateur Championship at High Point Country Club. Now, after a first round of four-under-par, 66, he is in a good position to reclaim the title.
“This tournament obviously holds a special place with me having won it before,” said Wilfong. “Anytime you can win your state amateur championship it's a cool thing but I'm in a completely different place in life than where I was back in 2001. I don't get to practice like I used to. I don't have any other aspirations of taking it to the next level anymore. All that stuff has kind of passed by, so now it's just more for fun.”
Wilfong had a lot more fun that most of the field today. While the weather stayed warm and sunny, a strong wind made for tough playing conditions for our afternoon wave. Wilfong recorded five birdies and only one bogey on a day where only four golfers shot under par.
Wilfong will have a strong field trailing him. Three golfers are sitting three shots back after opening rounds of 1-under-par, 69. Zack Swanson of Charlotte, N.C., Christian Park of Charlotte, N.C. and our 2018 N.C. Mid-Amateur Champion, Matt Kilgo of Charlotte, N.C. are all currently in a tie for second place. Swanson was the only player in the morning wave to shoot under par.
“I'll see what I have to do to keep up with some of these college kids,” said Wilfong. “It's always fun to come and watch them play. They're better than we were at that age. So, maybe I can kick in a few birdies and stay up there with them.”
The North Carolina Amateur Championship is a 72-hole, stroke play event. After tomorrow’s round, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final two rounds. An on-course playoff is used to break a tie for the championship.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 13, 2019, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
