Two teams sit atop the leader board at the 13th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship after finishing at 5-under-par 67 in the first round. Alex Burris of Greensboro, N.C. and Patricia Thompson of Hickory, N.C. finished with 6 birdies versus one bogey on the day to be tied for the lead. Angela Altice and Jeff Altice of Wake Forest, N.C. carded five birdies and were bogey-free en route to their 67. Burris-Thompson and Altice-Altice have a three-stroke lead over defending champions Zak Laws and Caroline Ellington of Raleigh, N.C. Laws-Ellington are no strangers to making a comeback. The pair overcame a five-stroke deficit to take home the trophy in 2017.

In the senior division, five teams finished in red numbers. The teams of Ken Taylor of Hopkins, S.C.-Leigh Coulter of Columbia, S.C., Charlie Hall-Niza Hall of Hilton Head, S.C., and Lisa Holland-Mike Holland of Rocky Mount, N.C. all finished at 3-under-par 69 and sit atop the senior division leader board.

Even-par 72 leads the super senior division at the Carolinas Mixed Team Championship. Bernice Slezak-Dennis Slezak of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Bruce Beck-Jackie Beck of Myrtle Beach, S.C. each carded an even-par 72 and are one stroke ahead of Carolyn Gosnell-Ronald Gosnell of Greenville, S.C.

The final round will be a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday morning, August 19. Teams will compete in a modified alternate shot format in the final round. Winners will be awarded in each division and low scorers in each flight will receive prizes.

The championship is contested over 36 holes using a mixed format of four-ball and modified alternate shot. Gross scores only. Teams may choose to compete in any division in which they are eligible: Championship division, Tournament division (shorter course), Senior division (male age 55+, female age 50+), or Super Senior division (male age 65+, female age 65+). Tournament division plays a shorter course and is ineligible for the overall championship. Tournament, Senior and Super Senior divisions will be pre-flighted by total team handicap index. Team handicap index is computed by adding 2/3 of the lower handicap index to 1/3 of the higher handicap index.

Entry is open to any team comprised of a male amateur and a female amateur golfer who have reached their 13th birthday by August 18, 2018, maintain a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, are members in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and have an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club.
