Top Names Travel to Treyburn for Carolinas Mid-Am

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (April 11, 2018) -- The Carolinas Golf Association's 38th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship will take place April 13-15 at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C. When this championship was last held at the club in 2009, Jarrett Grimes of Columbia, S.C. won by an impressive seven-shot margin.

The Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Beginning this year, the minimum age for entry was lowered from 30 to 25. Any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the CGA and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 10.4 may compete in this championship.

Notables among the twenty-three players under 30-years-old competing in the Carolinas Mid-Amateur for the first time are North Carolina Amateur champion Justin Tereshko (28) of Greensboro, N.C., Kevin O'Connell (29) of Cary, N.C., and David Gies, II (28) of Charlotte, N.C. Two players, Brandon Mader of Greenville, N.C. and Clay Watkins, III of Mebane, N.C. are turning 25-years-old during the championship, just meeting the new eligibility requirement.

The field for the 2018 championship is expected to consist of 119 players. Exempt players were automatically accepted into the championship while others were required to qualify for the tournament through one of five 18-hole qualifiers.

In last year's championship at Providence Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. local John Eades overcame a six-shot deficit in driving rain and wind to earn his first CGA title. As the field struggled in the difficult conditions, the 34-year-old's one-under 71 was the only round under par.

Former champions competing this year include: John Eades (2016) of Charlotte, N.C.; Sherrill Britt (2015) of West End, N.C.; Paul Tucker (2011) of Waxhaw, N.C.; Jarrett Grimes (2009) of Columbia, S.C.; and Paul Simson (1990, 1991, 1994, 1997) of Raleigh, N.C.
