Each year, 48 of the best golfers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia gather to compete against each other in three days of head-to-head matches. The Carolinas and Virginias teams consist of 24 total players: 14 amateur players (ages 18+), eight senior players (ages 50+) and two super senior players (ages 60+).

The first round is four-ball match play, the second is Pinehurst alternate shot, and the final round is the highly anticipated singles matches in which 72 points are up for grabs out of the overall 144 points. This year, the Carolinas team captured 82.5 points to win for the fourth year in a row and hold the overall series lead at 41 wins to Virignias’ 24 wins.

In the opening four-ball match play round, the Carolinas got off to an early lead, but the Virginias certainly kept it close at 20.5 points to 15.5 points. Virginias’ Mallory Kane and Julie Shin captured the biggest win of the day finishing 6 & 5. Then the Carolinas team stepped up with Nicole Adam and Kayla Dowell, Co-Captain Pam Prescott and Toni Notaro, and Kerry Rutan and Co-Captain Patty Moore winning all three of the points they were able to win on the front nine, back nine and overall.

The second round of the matches was the strongest round for the Carolinas team as they widened their 5 point lead to a 12 point lead winning 21.5 points to Virginias’ 14.5 points. Following suit from the opening round, Natalie Easterly and Joan Gardner from Virginia won with the largest margin of the day with an impressive 5 & 4 victory.

On the Carolinas side, five of the 12 sides were able to win every point they could have in the second round. College of Charleston teammates Mary Kathryn Talledo and Smith Knaffle, Kerry Rutan and June Wang, Toni Notaro and Sarah Phillips-Durst, Pam Prescott and Chrissie Spidell, and Katie Kirk and Emily Rapp all dominated their Pinehurst alternate shot matches to put Carolinas even further in the lead heading into the final round.

Notably, Rachel Wyatt and Alexis Sudjianto had a great comeback after losing the front nine 2 & 1, they were 3 down overall after No. 12 and won Nos. 13, 14 and 15 to win the back nine and tie the overall match.

Coming into the final round, the Carolinas led the matches 42 to 30 which is a relatively small margin considering 72 points are available in the singles matches. In the earlier matches, the Virginias team started to narrow the lead with Amy Ellerson capturing all three possible points in her match and Natalie Easterly taking home 1.5 points against Kim Briele from North Carolina. Though it wasn’t long until Toni Notaro, Sarah Phillips-Durst and Chrissie Spidell all earned 2.5 points for the defending Carolinas team which put them back in a comfortable lead that they wouldn’t let go.

Courtney Stiles on the Carolinas team dominated her singles match winning the front 3 & 1 and the back 4 & 3 to take the biggest victory of the event 7 & 6 overall. Smith Knaffle and Pam Prescott also won all three of their points in the final round. Both Patty Moore and Kim Briele made solid comebacks in their final matches after losing the front nine, they were both able to win the back nine and tie the overall match for 1.5 points each.

Co-Captain Pam Prescott won all 3 points in all of her matches and is the only player to do so on the Carolinas team, which is an incredible feat. Julie Shin on the Virginias team also captured victories in every one of her matches to earn the full 9 possible points this week.

We would like to sincerely thank Patty Moore for captaining the Carolinas team for the last four years with this being her final year as captain. She has led every team to victory since her start as captain in 2018, however she has played in the matches for an upwards of 25 consecutive years and helped the Carolinas win numerous team match titles. Moore is also 22-time CGA Champion and a fantastic captain going out on top.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the Virginia State Golf Association and the West Virginia Golf Association for being incredible hosts this year. The CGA would also like to thank the members and staff at Olde Mill Golf Resort for their hospitality in hosting the 65th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches.
