Team Carolinas Keeps the Women's Team Matches Trophy at Home

Congratulations to Team Carolinas on winning the 66th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, S.C. Team Carolinas won with 42.5 total points against Team Virginias who earned 38.5 total points. 

 

Each year, some of the best golfers from North Carolina and South Carolina take on some of the best players from Virginia and West Virginia in team matches. The Carolinas and Virginias teams consist of 18 players each: 10 amateur players (ages 18+), six senior players (ages 50+) and two super senior players (ages 60+).

 

On Day 1, the field played four-ball match play (9 holes) and modified alternate shot match play (9 holes). Three points were up for grabs for each match on Day 1 – one for four-ball, one for modified alternate shot, and one for the overall match. On the final day, the field played singles match play to determine which team would take home the trophy. Three points were up for grabs again – one for the front nine, one for the back nine, and one for the overall. 

 

In the first round of matches – four-ball match play – the competition was off to a great start. Team Carolinas won five points and Team Virginias won four points. For the Carolinas, the team of Pam Prescott (Captain) of Piedmont, S.C. + Lea Anne Brown of Mount Pleasant, S.C. had the biggest win at 3 & 2.

 

In the second round of matches – modified alternate shot match play – the points remained tight between the two teams. Both teams earned four and a half points during this portion of the competition, keeping them neck-and-neck with one another. For the overall matches, both teams again earned four and a half points to add to their total score.

 

Macie Burcham of Greensboro, N.C. + Grace Holcomb of Wilmington, N.C., along with Catherine Shealy of Blythewood, S.C. + Kerry Rutan of Daniel Island, S.C. all earned three out of three points possible for the day, giving Team Carolinas a boost going into singles match play. 

 

Heading into the final day, Team Carolinas had a lead over Team Virginias, but just by one point. With 14 points for Team Carolinas and 13 points for Team Virginias, the final day of singles matches was going to be exciting. 

 

In the final day of matches – singles match play – the energy was thrilling as each match was a great pairing. Many matches went through all 18 holes, with points coming down to the very last putt. Team members went right back out onto the course after their matches to support and cheer on their fellow teammates, leaving a full gallery watching the last couple matches of the day come through 18 green. Judy Penman and Kathy Hartwiger of Pinehurst, N.C., as well as Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. all won the most amount of points available in their matches to help the Carolinas.

 

This is Prescott’s third year being a captain for Team Carolinas, and she said “being a captain of something like this, with players from North Carolina and South Carolina, some of the best players in both states, it’s very humbling. I relish this experience and I like to say that’s a star in my accomplishments is being a captain of the Carolinas.”

 

“The team comradery that pulls older people with younger kids, it makes us all one. Having Katie as a younger captain has been awesome because she’s their voice, so we can have two voices come together,” Prescott explained regarding the team dynamic between the younger amateurs and the seniors on the team. 

 

“It’s funny because we’re all in competition against each other all year long, but when it comes to this, we’re all pulling for each other.”
