Stewart pulls off upset in S.C. Jr. Quarterfinal

No. 24 seed Drayton Stewart won both of his matches, including an upset over the No. 1 seed to claim a spot in the semifinals.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (July 12, 2018) -- Third round, quarterfinal, and semifinal results of the South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C. on Thursday, July 12 (6,589 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 72.2/134).

No. 24 seed Drayton Stewart of Charleston, S.C. pulled off the upset in the boys' quarterfinals, defeating No. 1 seed Nicholas Mayfield of Rock Hill, S.C. in 19 holes to punch his ticket to the semifinals. Girls No. 1 seed Anna Grace Brock of Greenwood, S.C. won both of her matches with a score of 2 and 1 today and will face off against No. 3 seed Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. tomorrow for the title.

Stewart and Mayfield approached the 18th hole all square and both set themselves up for a win with shots on the green. Stewart was left with about a 30-foot bending putt, which he lipped out and had to tap in for par. Mayfield missed his 15-footer and the two went to the 10th hole for a playoff. Stewart was then able to seal the win, draining a putt on the first playoff hole and completing the upset.

Stewart will face off against Keegan Vaugh of Myrtle Beach, S.C. in the semifinal match. Vaugh is the lowest seeded player left at No. 37 and will look to finish the Cinderella story tomorrow. Vaugh has had a mix of finishes in match play with two 1 up wins, a 3 and 2 finish, and a 7 and 6 finish.

On the other side of the bracket is No. 22 seed Ian Faulconer of Simpsonville, S.C. and No. 7 seed Austin Scott of Charleston, S.C. Faulconer has finished all of his matches early so far this tournament including a 5 and 4 win and a 6 and 4 win in today's rounds. Scott, however, has had the same fate, never needing to play a 17th hole in any of his matches.

In the girls' bracket, Brock continued her dominance of the competition with two early wins, but Dunlap will be fresh off of two 7 and 5 wins today, and will surely look to continue that strong play in the fight for the trophy.

The South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship begins with 18 holes of stroke play qualifying for all divisions. The boys' division was cut to the low 64 for match play. The girls’ division was cut to the low 16 for match play.

Entry is open to any male or female amateur golfer who has not reached their 19th birthday by July 13, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4. Entries are subject to rejection at any time, including during the event, by the CGA or the host club. The reason for rejection may include unbecoming conduct or cell phone use during a stipulated round. All players must conform to the “USGA Rules of Amateur Status” as specified in “The Rules of Golf”.
