Spicer Leads After Round Two of the Carolinas Women's Am

Jessica Spicer takes a three-shot lead into the final round of the 93rd Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 20, 2019) -- Second round results of the 93rd Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Thursday, June 20, 2019.

Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C. was able to continue her stellar play at this week’s Carolinas Women’s Amateur as the only player in the field to shoot under par both days. With three birdies and two bogeys, Spicer was able to put together a solid one-under-par, 71 in the second round of the championship. She has a two-day total of two-under-par, 142.

“I feel like I am playing really consistently right now. I mean I am not doing anything great, but I am not doing anything bad,” said Spicer. “So I am just kind of fairways and greens, making a couple of putts, giving myself some chances. I mean honestly, I felt like I rolled the ball really well today and I had a lot of putts that came super close, but just kind of did everything but go in. So hopefully if I can just keep the consistency and maybe get a couple of those to drop, tomorrow could be really good.”

Riley Smyth of Cary, N.C., who played alongside Spicer in round two, sits in second place after a round two score of one-over-par, 73. She’ll enter the final round three shots back of Spicer at one-over-par, 145. For some added pressure, the final group will have a classic college rivalry to boot. Spicer is a member of the Virginia Tech women’s golf team and Smyth plays for their rival, the University of Virginia women’s golf team.

Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. matched her first round score of one-over-par, 73 with another 73 on Thursday. Hawkins, at only 18-years-old, is already one of the most decorated golfers in the field. She has five CGA championship titles, including the 2018 North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship and the 2018 Twin States Junior Girls Championship. At two-over-par for the championship, Hawkins will start the final round four shots off of the leader.

Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. will round out the final group in the final round. Tindal improved on her opening score of 74 by two shots to shoot an even-par, 72. Tindal started with a three-over-par, 39 on her first nine holes but was able to rally on her second nine to shoot a three-under-par, 33. Tindal is half of last year’s Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship winning team along with her sister Jaelyn.

Our round one co-leader, Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C., is still in the mix after shooting a four-over-par, 76 in round two. Sudjianto shot an even par, 36 on her opening nine but struggled on the back a bit, making two double bogeys, a bogey and only one birdie. At three-over-par for the championship, Sudjianto is only five shots off the lead.

Recent South Carolina Women’s Amateur champion Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C. shot one-over-par, 73 in the second round and is currently tied with Sudjianto for fifth place. Two-time champion Katie Kirk of Greenville, N.C. (2014 and 2015) finished with a one-over-par, 73 in the second round and is seven shots off the lead.

In the Carolinas Division Jayne Pardus of Mount Pleasant, S.C. was able to hold onto her lead after shooting a three-over-par, 75 in the second round. Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. remains in second place after a second round score of five-over-par, 77.

The Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship was inherited by the Carolinas Golf Association from the Carolinas Women's Golf Association in 2013. The championship began in 1922 and annually crowns the women's amateur champion of the Carolinas.

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and Carolinas division (shorter course).

This competition includes gross scores only for the Championship division and gross and net scores for the Carolinas division. Players in the championship division are flighted using 36-hole scores. Players in the Carolinas division are pre-flighted within their division by Handicap Index®.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®.
