Sowell and Salzer in Finals of SC Match Play

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 16, 2018) -- Quarterfinals and Semifinals match play results of the 46th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at The Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday, June 16th (7,065 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 73.6/134).

Quarterfinals: Zachary Bishop of Travelers Rest, S.C. battled from behind to take down No. 1 seed Andrew Orischak of Hilton Head Island, S.C. Bishop got down early as Orischak won the first hole with a birdie. After 8 holes Bishop found himself 3 down. Buckling down, Bishop was able to win three of the next four holes to square the match. A win on the 13th hole gave the Limestone Saint his first lead of the day. With a birdie on the par 5 15th Bishop was two up with three to play. Another birdie on the 17th punched his ticket to the semifinals.

 

No. 2 seed Logan Sowell of Kershaw, S.C. continued his stellar play by defeating No. 10 seed Nick Russell of Hilton Head Island, S.C. 5 and 3 to earn his spot in the semifinals. Sowell found himself behind early as Russell jumped out to a two up lead thru 4 but battled his way back winning seven of the next 11 holes to advance.

 

Current N.C. State golfer, Christian Salzer, of Sumter, S.C. earned his way into the semifinals by beating 18 year old Onterio Jones of Simpsonville, S.C. in 20 holes. Salzer made incredible up and downs on 17 and 18 to send the match to extra holes. With an eagle on the par 5 second, Salzer was able to finally end the match.

 

James Lightsey of Fort Mill, S.C. ousted Harry Reynolds of Greenville, S.C winning 4 and 3. Lightsey was 1 up at the turn, and with wins on 12 and 13 he quickly found himself 3 up. The former U.S.C Upstate Spartan was able to finish the match with a birdie on the par 5 15th.

Semifinal Matches: The No. 2 seed Logan Sowell of Kershaw, S.C. was the first golfer to claim his spot in the finals, defeating James Lightsey of Fort Mill, S.C. 6 and 5 in the afternoon round. Sowell used six birdies during the match to advance him to his first Championship  Match appearance where he will face Christian Salzer of Sumter, S.C.  Salzer, the No. 21 seed, made his way to the championship match by beating out Travelers Rest's Zachary Bishop by score of 6 and 4. Salzer will be looking for his second CGA Championship while Sowell will battle for his first. The Championship Match will begin at 8:00am off the first tee at The Furman University Golf Club.
