Two of the top seeds at the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship punched their ticket to Friday morning's semifinals after impressive consecutive rounds on Thursday. No. 2 seed Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. and No. 3 seed Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. will face each other in the semifinal match for a chance to hoist the trophy.

Under the grueling heat, Einstein played confident in his Thursday matches. The rising freshman at High Point University defeated Will Hawley of Raleigh, N.C. in the Round of 16, 3-1. He then faced Andrew Wilmoth of Raleigh, N.C., who had an exceptional morning round. Wilmoth made a few key putts in the final holes, but Einstein was able to hold him off to win 2 and 1.

Childress faced a tough Round of 16 match against Tyler Dechellis of Clayton, N.C. and went to extra holes with the younger golfer, but he ultimately won in 19 holes. Childress said he had to remind himself to stay patient throughout the round.

"There were a couple of situations where I could have gotten a little nervous and not be comfortable, but I think I did a good job of believing that if I kept doing what I was doing, eventually it would work out," Childress said.

In the quarterfinal match, Childress went head-to-head with No. 58 seed Thomas Deal of Cornelius, N.C. The rising freshman at the University of Richmond made several birdies at the mid-point of the round to gain momentum and coast to a 4 and 3 victory. Looking forward to the final day of competition, he said he is content with his shots off the tee, and looks to continue that tomorrow. But for now, he's just happy to advance after three long days in the summer sun.

"I'm a lot more tired than I expected," Childress said. "It's been a lot of golf, but it's a good thing I'm still here. I'm excited and ready to go, and it will be fun."

Childress and Einstein will face off in one of tomorrow's semifinal matches, and Drew Hackett of Charlotte, N.C. will play Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. in the other semifinal match. Robbins defeated No. 5 seed Connor Jones of Raleigh, N.C., 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals to punch his ticket to the semifinals. Hackett's quarterfinal match against Noah Connor was close until the end, but he ultimately won 1-up.

The semifinal round of competition will take place on Friday morning followed by the final match on Friday afternoon.

The championship format will consist of 18 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play (6 rounds). The field is cut to the low 64 for match play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 22, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
