SC Amateur Match Play Preview

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (June 9, 2016) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 44^th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island from June 15-19.
 

68 players are expected to compete at this year's championship. The winner earns an exemption into the 102^nd Carolinas Amateur Championship to be played July 14-17 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. 

The championship is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play followed by a cut to the low 32 players for match play. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 15, 2016, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.

Players to watch:

• 2012 S.C. Amateur Match Play champion Matthew Laydon, 41, of Charleston. Laydon made it to the semifinals at last year's championship held at The Windermere Club before losing to eventual champion Andrew Novak.

• Charles Dallery, 19, of Sumter. Dallery, a rising sophomore at Gardner-Webb, lost to Novak in the quarterfinals of last year's championship.

• Thomas Todd, III, 29, of Laurens. Todd advanced to the Round of 32 at last year's championship. Todd is currently ranked 38th among Carolinas golfers.

• Jarrett Grimes, 43, of Columbia, won the 2009 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship. Jarrett partnered with Chris Mitchell to twice win the S.C. Partners Championship (2007, '15).

• Logan Sowell, 18, of Kershaw. Sowell is the 7th ranked junior in S.C.

• Bryce Howell, 21, of Blythewood. Howell teamed with Preston Cole to win the 2016 South Carolina Golf Association Four-Ball Championship.

Championship Schedule
Wednesday, June 15	Stroke Play Qualifying Round 1.
Thursday, June 16	Stroke Play Qualifying Round 2. Cut to low 32 scores for match play. Playoff for medalist and last match play position.
Friday, June 17	Round of 32 (AM) and Round of 16 (PM) match play. (18 holes each round).
Saturday, June 18	Quarterfinal (AM) and semifinal (PM) rounds of match play. (18 holes each round).
Sunday, June 19	Championship match (18 holes). Awards ceremony immediately following play.

                               
About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
