Quarterfinals Set For North Carolina Match Play


DURHAM, N.C. (August 4, 2017) -- Match play Round of 32 and 16 results from the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C. on Friday, August 4th (7,049 yards, par 36-36--72).

The top four seeds advanced through the match play Rounds of 32 and 16 Friday at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches of the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will take place on Saturday. The 18-hole final is scheduled for Sunday morning.

Stroke play medalist and No. 1 seed Bryce Hendrix of Raleigh began match play against Zack Swanson of Waxhaw, who grabbed the final spot after a five hole playoff that concluded Friday morning. Winning 5 & 4, Hendrix played the fifteen holes of the match in six-under-par. Swanson went down fighting, the opponents halved holes 12, 13, and 14 with three consecutive birdies.

Hendrix did not let his foot off the gas in his Round of 16 match vs. 17 seed Blake McShea of Zebulon. Again winning in 15 holes - by a margin of 5 & 3 - Hendrix converted seven birdies without making a bogey. In the 30 holes he played Friday, Hendrix was 13-under-par. "I was hitting it pretty close today," said Hendrix, 20, a rising junior at UNC-Greensboro. "I made a lot of good putts, and just kept on cruising."

In Saturday's quarterfinal match, Hendrix with face 8 seed Will Minton of Raleigh. Minton dispatched two Treyburn Country Club members in his matches. A 20-foot birdie on 17 propelled him to win 3 & 1 over 59-year-old Keith Waters of Raleigh. Then in the Round of 16, Minton toppled Stephen Lavenets of Apex 7 & 6.

No. 2 seed Harrison Rhoades of Raleigh also cruised in his Round of 32 match, winning 7 & 6 over Allen Smith of Durham. A rising junior at N.C. State, Rhoades then edged Austin Bonfiglio 1 up in the Round of 16, with the two opponents halving the final six holes.

Eric Bae of Pinehurst, the No. 3 seed, is into the quarterfinals following a pair of 4 & 3 victories. Bae, a 19-year-old rising sophomore at Wake Forest University, will face Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury in the quarterfinals. Lyerly, 18, will play at UNC-Greensboro in the fall. Both still teenagers, they are accomplished players. Last year Lyerly became the youngest player to win the North Carolina Amateur. Bae is a two-time CGA champion and qualified to play the U.S. Amateur later this month.
