Petersen & Smith Lead Dogwood
On a another hot summer day in North Carolina, 166 players teed it up for round 2 of the 12th Dogwood Junior State Championship, including 129 boys and 37 girls. After 36-holes the field will be cut to low 60 and ties for the boys and 18 and ties for the girls. The second round included a two hour inclement weather suspension that forced play late into the night and will be concluded Thursday morning. All but four players finished before darkness, so those players will finish their rounds Thursday morning at 7:30am. The cut and then re-pairing will be completed immediately after these players finish with the final round starting at 9:00am off of the 1st and 10th tee.
After nearly 2 rounds of play (4 players still left to complete their second round), Fulton Smith of Pinehurst leads the way at 6-under par after shooting back to back rounds of 69. After the round Smith said, "I hit the ball really well off the tee and gave myself a ton of looks," and he was not kidding. Smith's round included 8 birdies, which he said "gives me more confidence [going into tomorrow] to go at pins and try to go low again." Smith will be tough to beat after two great rounds but was not the only player to record 8 birdies on the day. Matthew Sharpstene of Asheville also had 8 birdies on his round that resulted in the best score of the day at 66 that vaulted him into second place, only one shot behind Smith.
Walker Cress of Concord shot a round of two under par 70 today and sits alone in third place at two under par 142. There are four players currently at one under par, so the final round should be an excited day to see who will come out on top of the 12th Dogwood State Junior Championship.
On the girls side, after shooting three over par, 75 in round 1, Natalie Peterson of Holly Springs followed that up with an even-par round of 72 to take the lead over Kathryn Carson of Mooresville by one shot. Peterson began her round on the back nine where she recorded two bogeys and seven pars, but turned it around on her second nine by finding two birdies to get her back to even par for the day. When asked about her round she said, "I putted better today, I switched putters because I wasn't making anything yesterday and didn't think it could any worse." The change seemed to work and helped her vault into the lead heading into the final round. Peterson's mindset going into tomorrow is to "hit greens and don't over think it," she also said, "I don't want to get nervous...just play my game and that should be enough to win." Peterson definitely has the confidence and the game to pull off the win at the 12th Dogwood State Junior.
In addition to Carson, Peterson will have to fend off Emily Hawkins of Lexington and Rachel Kuehn of Ashville who are both 3 shots off the lead at six over par. Kuehn was the leader after the first round but struggled a bit in round two that resulted in a six over par, 78. Two time defending champion, Callista Rice of Mars Hill is in a tie for 9th at 15-over par after two rounds and has struggled according to her standards.
