Pardus Reigns At Carolinas Senior Women's Amateur

 

RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. (August 25, 2021) -- Final results of the 23rd Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club, in Rutherfordton, N.C. on August 25, 2021. The Championship Division competed at 5,066 yards, while the Carolinas Division competed at 4,651 yards (35-36--71).

In what was a hotly contested final round of the Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship Jayne Pardus of Mount Pleasant, S.C. made her mark on the 23rd playing of this event with a two-shot victory.

 

“I really had to play to my strengths,” said Pardus. “I didn’t try to hit the driver on some short holes that could have gotten me in trouble. I was really just trying to set up each shot for a better opportunity and not put myself in too much trouble.” 

 

Pardus is not new to success in this event, as she has now won it two of the last three years, with her maiden victory of the Patty Moore Trophy coming in 2019. In 2021, her steady play over the two-day, 36-hole event was ultimately the difference maker. 

 

“This is extra special,” said Pardus. “The U.S. Senior is coming up and Pam [Prescott] who competed with me today, Patty [Moore] and I will be going so to be able to play and continue to play with these women is so special. Everyone wants to be able to win this so to be able to win this again is extra special.”

 

After a first round 3-over-par, 74, Pardus improved on her final round with a 1-over-par, 72 while playing in the final group alongside defending champion Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. and Kerry Rutan of Daniel Island, S.C.

 

“I had some great competitors,” said Pardus. “It was wonderful to play alongside Pam. She's wonderful and a fantastic competitor and so is Kerry. I had an amazing group to play with today.”

 

Pardus absolutely exploded out of the gates in her opening nine on Wednesday, carding a bogey-free, 2-under-par, 33 with birdies on holes four and nine. While Pardus would drop a few shots early on in the beginning of her homeward nine, she stood on 18 tee at Cleghorn with a one-shot advantage over Prescott and Rutan. 

 

“I was really able to make some good birdies on the front,” said Pardus. “I rolled in some good par putts as well and I set myself up to get to the back nine.”

 

After smartly laying up to a short iron position on the tough finishing hole, that played as the hardest hole on the golf course this week, Pardus’ ball came out a little too hot, eventually coming to its resting place just over the green. After Rutan saved par, the pressure was on Pardus to roll in her five-footer for the win. Not backing down one moment, a good roll saw the ball fall in the center cup to give her the title. 

 

“The golf course demanded you to think on every shot,” said Pardus. “You just did not get a break. I feel like this course was a great challenge to me because sometimes I struggle with that. I was glad I could persevere through that.”

 

Rutan would earn runner-up, with a final round of 4-over-par, 75 cementing her at 6-over-par for the championship. Prescott, the first round leader, would finish in solo third with a two-day total of 8-over-par. Rounding out the top five is Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. who finished in fourth with a two-day total of 10-over-par, while Carol Hammond came in solo fifth place with a score of 14-over-par over the two days.

 

In the Carolinas Division. Tammy Johnson of Taylorsville, N.C. never trailed and would come away with the victory. 

 

Johnson rebounded beautifully after a tough start to her final round. Beginning with a double-double start, she played the next seven holes of her opening nine in 1-under-par, carding a birdie on the Par-4, 15th. An eventual birdie on her last hole, the Par-4, ninth, would see Johnson card a 5-over-par, 76 to finish at 10-over-par for the tournament. 

 

Finishing in second place was Lee Heelan of Tryon, N.C. who carded a final round of 10-over-par, 81 to finish at 18-over-par for the championship. Rounding out the top three is Betty Armbruster of Simpsonville, S.C. who also finished with a final round of 10-over-par, 81 for a tournament total of 19-over-par. Armbruster would come away from this event with hardware, winning the low Super Senior award in the Carolinas Division.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
