Orischak Leads at SC Match Play

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 13, 2018) -- First round stroke play qualifying results of the 46th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at The Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. on Wednesday, June 13th (7,065 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 73.6/134).

Andrew Orischak of Hilton Head Island, S.C. carded a six-under-par 66 to lead in the first round of the 46th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at The Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.

"I putted really well, and hit the ball pretty well too," said Orischak. Orischak started his round hot, with eagles on holes 2 and 6.  He made the turn at three-under, and followed it up with another three-under par on the back nine.  Orischak "felt comfortable off the tee," having not played the course in a few years.  Orischak is looking for medalist honors in the stroke play, but is ultimately looking for "redemption" in the match play.  "I want to play Todd again", said Orischak, after losing to Todd White in the quarterfinals of last year's championship.  

 

Sitting two shots behind Orischak is Michael Hocker of Aiken S.C., who fired a four-under par 68. Hocker started out hot as well with birdies on his first two holes. After a few errant shots, he found himself even par for his round thru 11 holes.  "It is a game of misses, and I tried to eliminate those," said Hocker.  Eliminate the misses he did, as he eagled the par 4 12th, and made a near double eagle on the par 5 15th to finish his round at 68. 

 

In third place is Onterio Jones, from Simpsonville, S.C., and McClure Thompson, of Little River S.C., after firing three-under par 69. 

 

Following Thursday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, the field will be cut to the low 32 players for match play. The stroke play medalist earns the No. 1 seed in the bracket.

 

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 13, 2018, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4
