Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, N.C. fired off a 6-under-par, 66 to sit atop the leaderboard after the opening round of the 6th Carolinian Amateur. Neveu’s round started on the par-4, No.10 which he parred as one of his 12 pars on the day.
He got off to a hot start birdieing Nos. 11, 13, 17 and 18 to bring his total for the outward nine to an impressive 32. His sub-par score on No. 11 was a testament for his first day. Neveu put his tee-shot into the woods and punched out to 6 feet from the hole and made his birdie putt.
Neveu was playing conservatively on Friday. His approach to Keith Hills Golf Course is knowing that the course is playing firm with lots of roll. He is not aggressively attacking the pins, but rather looking to leave himself manageable putts.
The defending champion, Tim Bunten of Concord, N.C. holds second position at 5-under-par, 67. He started the round with a steady train of pars until he chipped in for birdie on No. 6 to get the momentum going. Two clutch up and downs on Nos. 7 and 8 led the recent East Carolina University graduate to a string of birdies on Nos. 9, 10, 11 and 13. Bunten found trouble on No. 16 making his only bogey on the day, but he quickly recovered with a birdie on No. 18 to secure his seat in second position.
Zac Lewis of Winnabow, N.C. and Jackson Bode of Pinehurst, N.C. have staked a tie for third position after opening rounds of 4-under-par, 68. Notably, Lewis approached the 517 yard, par-5 No. 18 at 2-under-par, 65. He hit his driver to 225, a 3-iron to 7 feet and sank his putt for an eagle on the final hole.
William Grasty of Charlotte, N.C. carded 3-under-par, 69 to take solo fifth position entering the second round tomorrow. The leaderboard is stacked behind him and with 36 holes left to play, we are guaranteed to see movement on the leaderboard over the weekend.
The first round of the Carolinian was also a qualifier for the North Carolina Amateur Championship and the Carolinas Amateur Championship. Justin Guilford of Davidson, N.C. earned medalist honors for both qualifiers with a 2-under-par, 70 finish. The cut line fell at 2-over-par, 74 for both the N.C. Amateur Qualifier and the Carolinas Amateur Qualifier. 16 players made the cut for the N.C. Amateur and 18 players qualified for the Carolinas Amateur.
The second round will begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with starting times until 2:50 p.m. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage of the final round of the 6th Carolinian Amateur Championship.
