Messimer, Goboy Lead Respective Divisions At Hope Valley

DURHAM, N.C. (August 3, 2021) -- First Round results from the 4th Hope Valley Junior Invitational at Hope Valley Country Club, in Durham, N.C. The girls’ field competed at 6,019 yards (35-35--70), while the boys’ competed at 6,720 (35-35--70).

The first round of the Hope Valley Junior Invitational had its fair share of terrific golf.

 

Leading the tournament on the Boys side of the Invite only field is Clark Xander Goboy of Chesapeake, VA. Goboy rolled in five birdies on the day en route to a 4-under-par 66 at Hope Valley Country Club. 

 

Andrew Gregory of Inman, S.C. posted a contending first round number as well, firing a 3-under-par 67 to sit just one back of the lead. Gregory birdied five holes on his day, taking advantage of holes five, seven, nine, 13 and 15. 

 

Will Hartman of Marvin, N.C. and Owen Kose of Holly Springs, N.C. are right on their tails, sitting at 2-under-par after first round 68’s. Hartman made his turn towards the back at even par through his first nine, and went on a birdie spree on the homeward nine rolling in birdies on holes 13, 14, 15, and 17 to shoot a 2-under-par 33 on the back. Kose rolled in birdies on five holes today, and shot 1-under-par on both nines on his way to his 68. 

 

On the girls side of things it’s Madison Messimer of Myrtle Beach, S.C. who paces the field after a first round 1-over-par 71. Messimer rolled in five birdies on her day, birdieing holes one, five, eight, 14 and 18. 

 

Kate Barber of Savannah, GA had a great day of her own, she just trails Messimer in solo second after an opening round 2-over-par 72. Barber played steady golf all day, with her lone birdie of the round coming on the Par-4 17th. 

 

Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C., Sawyer Brockstedt of Rehoboth, Beach, DE, Saia Rampersaud of Durham, N.C., Mary Sears Brown of Pinehurst, N.C., and Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C., are all tied for third after posting  a first round 4-over-par 74. 

 

While the participants battled some early rain that softened Hope Valley CC, the Donald Ross design still played extremely challenging, which will be a theme of the week as it dries and firms up.

Hope Valley Country Club was founded in 1926 and the course was designed by the world-famous golf course architect, Donald J. Ross, in coordination with landscape architect Robert Cridland. Unlike many of his projects, Ross personally supervised the planning and construction of Hope Valley. Centered around its Aymar Embury II Clubhouse, the course has hosted many significant golf events. They include the U.S. Amateur Qualifying for both Men and Women, the U.S. Senior Men’s Qualifying, the North Carolina Amateur Championship, Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship, Women’s Western Junior National Championship and Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship.

 

The tournament moment, of which the club members may be proudest of, took place on April 1, 1945 when Byron Nelson won the Durham Open at Hope Valley. This was his fourth victory out of winning eleven tournaments in a row, a PGA Tour record. Hope Valley membership recognizes that proud stewardship of these outstanding traditions requires that their club continue to revere the old and embrace the new in order to share their commitment to the great game of golf with upcoming generations.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
