It was a hot and humid first round at the 13th Jimmy Anderson Boys' Invitational as players fought through some high temperatures reaching into the lower 90’s at Jacksonville Country Club. Jack LaPiana of Charlotte, N.C. leads after shooting a 5-under-par 67, which gives him a two-shot lead heading into the final round.

LaPiana got off to a smooth start with a birdie on the first followed by an eagle on the par 5, 7th hole. LaPiana went on a tear on the back as he went bogey-free to shoot a 32 to finish the round.

There’s plenty of action at the top of the leaderboard as 12 players are within three shots of the lead. This includes six players tied for second at 3-under-par. Among them are Holland Giles of Pinehurst, N.C., Nick Norman of Gastonia, N.C., as well as Jonathan Honeywell of Whispering Pines, N.C.

Ayush Bodhale of Huntersville, N.C., Gray Mitchum of Winterville, N.C., and William Webb of Raleigh N.C. are right there as well, sitting in that traffic jam at second place.

Giles only had one bogey on the day to go along with 4 birdies while Honeywell doubled the 8th hole which played as the hardest hole of the day. Norman and Webb impressively also only had one bogey on the day while Bodhale and Mitchum both earned birdies on the reachable par 5, 7th to help jumpstart their respective rounds of 69.

Jimmy Anderson was the head golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club for over 25 years.  Each Saturday morning, he conducted a junior golf clinic to help spread the game of golf to the next generation.  During his tenure at Jacksonville CC, he taught many juniors including Mallory Miller, the 1987 N.C. Junior Champion and numerous future collegiate and golf professionals.  Not only did he teach the game of golf, but was always there with a helpful word of encouragement to any young golfer.

The Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational will continue with the final round at Jacksonville Country Club on Sunday, July 11, where players will look to win the 13th Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational in hopes of getting their names ingrained alongside a long list of prestigious winners.
