Matt Kilgo of Charlotte, N.C. continued his superb play this week, extending his day one lead from two shots to three heading into the final round of the 25th North Carolina Mid-Am Championship hosted at Ballantyne Country Club.

Kilgo shot a bogey-free 63 in round one and followed that incredible performance up with another bogey-free round of 69 on Saturday.

"I was pretty conscious of trying not to have a letdown," Kilgo said about the pressure of following up on his round one score. "If you look over the course of history, any time somebody goes really low they usually follow it up with a score of ten shots higher or more...I managed to not make a bogey today for the second straight day so I'm pretty proud of that but overall I'm very pleased."

Thomas Owen of Fayetteville, N.C. made up the most ground on our leader in round two by tying for the low round of day two with a 5-under-par, 67. Owen goes into the final round tied for second place and will play in the final pairing with Kilgo and the 2014 N.C. Mid-Am Champion, Joe Jaspers of Huntersville, N.C.

"I played well and got a couple putts to fall outside of 15 feet today," Owen said after his round. "I think I haven't three-putted this tournament and I've just been trying to get the pace right. If it falls, it falls. If it doesn't, just tap it in and move on. I'm just trying to keep the pressure off the putter."

Owen said that he was able to feed off of a lot of his playing partners today and the group had a "really good energy."

Tomorrow's round may not be as friendly but there should be plenty of birdies to be had. After Saturday's round, the cut is set and pairings will now be based on scoring.

When asked how different the round will be tomorrow knowing that he will be paired with his two closest competitors, Kilgo welcomed the challenge.

"I Actually prefer that," Kilgo said. "Watching good golf shots is contagious and I know Joe Jaspers pretty well...I look forward to the challenge. I'm sure there will be a lot of good golf shots hit tomorrow and I'm sure it will be a battle."

Jaspers, who sat alone in second place after round one, shot a solid two-under-par 70 in round two. He is now tied for second place with Owen at 9-under; three shots back of our leader.

The North Carolina Mid-Amateur is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, there will be a cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering hole-by-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909.
