Katie Rose Higgins Captures Second CGA Title of 2013

Stanley, NC – Final Results of the 16^th Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship hosted by Cowans Ford Country Club on Thursday , July 11 , 2013.  Par 36-36—72 5975 yards, 74.6/131.

Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC captures her second CGA championship title of 2013 by defeating Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC, 3 and 2.  Higgins cruised through her semifinal match after facing off Taylor Allison of Elizabeth City, NC.  Higgins carded four birdies and was able to close out her morning match by a 6 and 5 margin very early. 

In the other semifinal match Katie Kirk had to face off against her fellow teammate at East Carolina University, Lane Gakeler of Greenboro, NC.  Kirk would have to play 21 holes before she successful closed out her match against Gakeler.  “That really was nerve-racking,” Kirk said.  Both players would keep trading birdies and pars throughout the morning.  “Neither one of us could get ahead very much,” Gaekler said.  Unfortunately, Gakeler would make bogey on the par 4 4^th hole while Kirk would nuzzle up her par putt to punch her ticket into the finals.

It would then be a battle of the Katie’s in the final.  Kirk would take an early 1 up lead and would not relinquish it until Higgins hit her approach shot to within inches on the par 4 6^th hole.  The match would go to all square.  Higgins would birdie the par 3 11^th to go 2 up and she would close out the match on her 15^th hole to win her first CGA Women’s Match Play Championship crown.  Higgins now holds the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship Trophy and the Carolinas Women’s Match Play Trophy in her possession.  “That feels pretty amazing,” Higgins smiled.  “I’ve been working hard on my game and I feel like its paying off.”
