Joon Jang Cruises to Carolinas Junior Girls' Victory

Hyo Joon Jang of Bluffton, S.C. shattered records all week long at the 64th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship. In route to her 13-stroke victory, the largest in championship history, Jang shot rounds of 66 twice, setting and tying the Country Club of Asheville’s course record for women. With her second 66, she also secured the lowest total score in championship history, finishing at 11-under-par, 202 total.

 

“I made an eagle on the first hole, and that helped me set the tone for the day,” Jang said. “It was a long day and I was pretty tired, but that start helped me push through.”

 

Jang said that her focus on the first hole was simply to get it up on the green. With the front pin location, she didn’t want to leave it short, but once it was up, it hopped into the hole.

 

From there, Jang kept the momentum going. She made birdie on No. 2 and got up and down for par on both Nos. 4 and 5 after missing the greens in regulation. With a birdie on No. 7 and bogey on No. 9, Jang made the turn to the back nine at 3-under-par on the day and with an 11-shot lead.

 

Jang finished her round with a bogey-free back nine, giving her just three bogeys on the week to her 12 birdies.

 

“Because of COVID-19, a lot of my tournaments were canceled. Getting this win in a big tournament is exciting,” Jang said. “It was great competition all week and coming out on top gives me tons of confidence going forward. I’m thankful for the CGA who organized this tournament. I really loved playing in it.”

 

Jang wasn’t the only player in the field to shoot a 66 this week. Runner-up Alexia Siehl of Fort Mill, S.C. also tied the course record for women in the final round. Siehl was able to recover from a second round 76 and surprised herself with her play on Thursday.

 

“I hit everything pretty close, but I was just not thinking about what was going to happen and played hoping for the best,” Siehl said. “Yesterday was pretty bad, so today was all about staying on my line and trusting myself. I am so happy and kind of in shock. I am amazed that I tied the record today after all that happened yesterday. I am really happy for myself.”

 

Siehl finished at 2-over-par, 215 total, while Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C. tied for third at 7-over-par, 220 total.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 150 One-Day (net and gross) events as well as qualifying for USGA national championships. The CGA serves golf in the Carolinas with numerous programs such as: the USGA Handicap System; tournament management software and support; course measuring and course/slope ratings; agronomy consultation; answers about the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, and Handicapping; Carolinas Golf Magazine; Interclub series; Tarheel Youth Golf Association; Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame; expense assistance for USGA Junior and Girls' Junior qualifiers from the Carolinas; and the Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF). The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.     The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
