JC McFadyen Holds Lead at NC Am Match Play

John McFadyen of Fayetteville leads stroke play qualifying following an opening round 67

DURHAM, N.C. (August 2, 2017) -- First round of stroke play qualifying results from the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C. on Wednesday, August 2nd (7,049 yards, par 36-36--72).

22-year-old John McFadyen of Fayetteville posted a bogey-free round of 5-under-par 67 to take a one shot lead at the halfway mark of stroke play qualifying in the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham.

McFadyen missed just two fairways and one green in regulation during his low-stress round Wednesday. A seven-foot par save on his third hole was the lone scare of the round. "I was putting the ball great, just trying to stay on the correct side of the hole with my approaches," said McFadyen, a senior at Queens College. "I'm taking it next shot after next shot."

In last year's championship at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club, McFadyen posted a second round 63 to secure the No. 4 seed for match play. In the Round of 32, he was bounced from the championship by eventual champion William Rainey. "Making the final four is a big goal for me this year," stated McFadyen.

Harrison Rhoades of Raleigh mixed seven birdies with three bogeys. A rising junior at N.C. State, Rhoades was four-under in his first six holes. Playing even par golf from there, a 68 places him solo second.

Tied for third at three-under-par are Eric Edwards, 21, of Salisbury, a rising senior at George Mason; Nolan Mills, IV, 20, of Charlotte, a rising senior at N.C. State; and Bryce Hendrix, 20, of Raleigh, a rising junior at UNC-Greensboro.

The 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for match play. After Thursday's second round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the low 32 players. Match play will begin on Friday.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering hole-by-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909.
