Hope Valley Junior Round One Results

First round results from the Hope Valley Junior Invitational hosted by Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, NC on Tuesday, August 14, 2018.  Boys yardage - 6,720 yards, par 70 (72.9/136) Girls yardage - 5,844 yards, par 70 (73.5/139)

Bronson Myers of Columbia, S.C. and Nick Dunlap of Birmingham, AL finished tied for the lead in the boys' division after day one with two four-under-par, 66's. In the girls' division, Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. and Kayla Smith of Burlington, N.C. also sit together at the top of the leaderboard at even-par, 70.

Nick Dunlap started the day with an even-par, 35 on the front nine, but he came alive in the second half of the day. Dunlap shot four-under on the last five holes to head into moving day in a commanding position. Dunlap said he had a strong all-around game today but really credited the irons with his success today.

"I putted really well, but it was really my iron play," said the rising high school freshman, "There were some good pin positions out there today, so I had to position myself pretty well, and I was able to do that successfully."

Dunlap said he began to feel really good at the end of his round so he hopes that can carry over to tomorrow's round.

"Towards the back nine, I started hitting it exactly where I wanted to, so that's big coming towards these last two days," said Dunlap.

Myers was a little more consistent with his round, shooting two-under-par, 33 on both sides today. Myer said his putting really saved him out on the course today.

"I was making a lot of up and downs," said the 2019 Elon commit, "I made just about everything within 10 feet."

Myers was the runner-up at the Carolinas Junior back in July so he's been in this position before and feels good about where he stands heading into day two.

"It feels good to be tied for the lead going into tomorrow, but I still have to make sure to play solid and not get ahead of myself," said Myers.

Emily Dunlap was able to make two birdies and an eagle to cancel out her four bogeys. The 2018 S.C. Junior Match Play champion is no stranger to the spotlight and will certainly be looking to limit mistakes in order to get into red numbers tomorrow.

Smith kept it simple with just two birdies and two bogeys on the day. The rising high school senior was able to finish strong, shooting one-under-par on the challenging last three holes.

Drew Hackett of Charlotte, N.C. sits in third place in the boys' division one off the lead at three-under-par, and Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. is in third in the girls' division at one-over-par.

This junior golf tournament is conducted by Hope Valley CC and the Carolinas Golf Association
