Hawkins Hails Victorious at 95th Carolinas Women's Amateur

 

MONROE, N.C. (June 12, 2021) -- Final results of the 95th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Rolling Hills Country Club in Monroe, N.C. on June 12, 2021. The Championship Division competed at 6,271 yards and the Carolinas Division competed at 5,386 yards (par 36-36--72).

In an action-packed final round, Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. was ultimately crowned the 95th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion. This is Hawkins’ sixth CGA championship title and first Carolinas Women’s Amateur title.

 

The rising junior at Campbell University scored a 3-under-par, 69 to clinch the title by three strokes after carding a 72 and 74 in the first and second round respectively, for a three day total of 1-under-par, 215. After starting tied for fourth on Thursday, Hawkins moved up to being tied for third on Friday. Hawkins was paired in the final group tee time with fellow front-runners Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C., Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. 

 

Hawkins entered the final round four strokes off the lead. She kept her front nine pristine and bogey-free shooting a 35 with one birdie on No. 7. “I hit a really good drive, left myself about 90 feet in. Then I hit a wedge a little long and to the left of the pin, but I made a nice 15 foot putt for birdie,” said Hawkins. “It was good to get that going and get some confidence!” 

 

Hawkins took that momentum and ran with it on the back. She saw her chance when her playing partner Morgan Ketchum, who held the lead for several holes on the front nine, began to struggle a bit just after the turn. “I felt like I was in a good spot and playing well enough so I said ‘let me get a couple more birdies and have a good round,’” Hawkins remarked.
 

After making the turn, Hawkins’ concise approach shots and putting earned her four more birdies. By this time she was dialed in and hit her approach shots close to give herself easier putts for birdie. “I had one on 10 where I hit a good drive and had 113 yds left. I hit a good shot hole high and a little to the left and I made a nice stress free putt.” She then proceeded to make two consecutive birdies back-to-back on Nos. 12 and 13 with another on No. 17 to card a 2-under-par, 36 on the back.

 

Ketchum, a rising high school senior from Winston-Salem, N.C. finished runner-up with a three day total of 2-over-par, 218. The reigning N.C. Junior Girls’ Champion stayed consistently at the top of the leaderboard this week and was tied or held the solo lead for the majority of the front nine today.


Ketchum competed with a deep and talented field consisting of many seasoned collegiate and former collegiate players, but she kept her cool through the heat from her competitors and under the watchful eyes of recruiting college coaches to claim runner-up.

 

Sophia Burnett of Bluffton, S.C., defending champion Anna Morgan of Spartanburg, S.C. and Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. tied for third with three day total scores of 4-over-par, 220.


Burnett, a rising sophomore at Furman carded a 1-over-par, 73 in the final round to jump from tied for eighth in the first round to tied for second position for several holes today. Anna Morgan fired off an even-par, 72 in her final round catapulting herself to tied for third after being tied with Burnett for eighth in the first round. The rising junior shared Collegiate Cup honors with her teammate Burnett to bring the first Inaugural Collegiate Cup title to the Furman University Paladins. 
 

Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. was the overall Carolinas Division champion and earned low senior honors with a three day score of 1-over-par, 217. The reigning Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur champion remained determined and focused through all three days, which she said helped contribute to conquering the challenges Rolling Hills Country Club presented. 

 

“To win any golf tournament is amazing, but to win this with all the amazing competition I was playing in was hard,” Prescott remarked. “The golf course wasn’t easy, the greens were really fast but I’m proud of how I played this week out here.” Prescott’s win can be attributed to her confidence, putting and strong ironplay.


Peyton O’Brien of Clemson, S.C. earned runner-up in the overall Carolinas Division with a three day score of 16-over-par, 232. Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C., the 2007 Carolinas Women’s Amateur champion, earned low super senior honors with a three day score of 19-over-par, 235.

Inaugural Collegiate Cup Results

 

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 150 One-Day (net and gross) events as well as qualifying for USGA national championships. The CGA serves golf in the Carolinas with numerous programs such as: the USGA Handicap System; tournament management software and support; course measuring and course/slope ratings; agronomy consultation; answers about the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, and Handicapping; Carolinas Golf Magazine; Interclub series; Tarheel Youth Golf Association; Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame; expense assistance for USGA Junior and Girls' Junior qualifiers from the Carolinas; and the Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF). The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
