Goff earns No. 1 seed at NC Jr Boys;

Alex Goff of Kings Mountain, N.C. carded a 7-under-par 64 to earn the No. 1 seed for match play at the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

Alex Goff of Kings Mountain, N.C. shot the low score and earned the No. 1 seed for match play at the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship. Goff carded a 7-under-par, 64 with eight birdies in qualifying stroke play at Pine Island Country Club on Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

Explosive from his first tee shot, Goff birdied his first three holes to take a quick lead, which he said helped boost his confidence early in the day. He finished his front nine with five birdies and no bogeys. 

After the turn, Goff bogeyed his tenth hole, but quickly steadied himself. He said he reminded himself to stay patient throughout the rest of the round, and it proved effective. He birdied his last hole and came into the clubhouse after the morning wave of players as the leader.

"My wedges were really good," Goff said. "I hit most of them within 10 feet. I made a few putts, but for the most part, I was just hitting it tight off the tee, which is what you have to do when the rough is thick out here."

Looking to close out more holes with clean putts in the rest of the week's rounds, Goff said that today really boosted his confidence for the rest of the week's match play competition.

"It's big," Goff said. "I know that I can really get at this course, and it's always an advantage having a good seed for match play, so it should be fun. I'm excited."

Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. and Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. finished two shots behind Goff. Einstein finished his round without bogeying a single hole and both players carded a 5-under-par, 66. Childress grabbed the No. 2 seed while Einstein received the No. 3 seed. Charlie Barr of Salisbury, N.C and Connor Jones of Raleigh, N.C. and . finished 4-under-par with a 67 and earned the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds for match play.

14 of the 153 players in the field finished the qualifying round in red numbers. A tight competition, 19 players finished with a 5-over-par, 76 and competed in a playoff to determine which 10 players would make the cut and advance to tomorrow's match play round.

Match play competition will begin tomorrow with round one played Wednesday morning and round two following Wednesday afternoon. Round three and the quarterfinals of match play will take place on Thursday, and the semifinals and final matches will take place on Friday.

 

The championship format will consist of 18 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play (6 rounds). The field is cut to the low 64 for match play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 22, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
