Final Four Remain at 16th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship

Stanley, NC – First and Quarterfinal Round Results of the 16^th Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship hosted by Cowans Ford Country Club on Wednesday , July 10 , 2013.  Par 36-36—72 5975 yards, 74.6/131.

Defending champion, Dawn Woodard of Greer, SC was ousted in the first round of match play by Taylor Allison of Elizabeth City, NC.  Allison carded five birdies on the day in her match against the two time defending champion.  “There was not much I could do out there except try and make birdies,” Woodard said.  “And even then when I did make a birdie it was never good enough to win a hole back.”  Allison would then go on and defeat Casey Ward of Chapel Hill, NC by a 5 & 4 margin to find herself in the semifinals for the first time.  Allison will have to face 2013 Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion (stroke play) Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC. 

Higgins had to go extra holes in her first match of the day against Lea Venable of Simpsonville, SC.  “It was a tough match,” Higgins said.  “We were back and forth all day,”  Higgins would then go on to defeat 2012 CGA Women’s Match Play Runner-Up, Laura Wearn of Charlotte, NC in the quarterfinals.  The second semifinal match is made up of two East Carolina University Women’s Golf Team members and friends, Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC and Lane Gakeler of Greensboro, NC.  Kirk sailed through the first round after defeating Tiffany Robbins of Fort Mill, SC 6 and 5.  Kirk would then claw her way into the semifinals by defeating medalist Hayley Hammond of Mooresville, NC in 19 holes.  Gakeler would also have to go extra holes in her quarterfinal match against Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, NC.
