With the best junior players in the North Carolina displaying their games at one of the state’s top courses it is no surprise that nine players broke par after the first round of the 10th Dogwood State Championship hosted by Sapona Ridge Country Club in Lexington, NC. Walker Cress of Concord, NC and Nolan Mills of Charlotte, NC are tied for first after first round 67’s. Sitting just one shot behind the leaders are Walker Simas of Charlotte, NC and Matthew Sharpstene of Asheville, NC.
In the girls' division Roshnee Sharma of Waxhaw, NC opened the Championship with a two over par 73. The defending Carolinas Golf Association Girls’ 15 and Under champion, Sharma, leads Callista Rice of Mars Hill, NC by a single stroke. Rice bounced back after a tough opening nine, shooting one under par on her final nine. Joliana Elias of Jamestown, NC and Jessica Kittelberger of Raleigh are currently tied for third after shooting first round 75’s.
