Clayton Clinches Top Seed, NC Junior Boys' Championship

ROARING GAP, N.C. (June 22, 2021) --  Stroke play qualifying results of the 54th North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship at Roaring Gap Club in Roaring Gap, N.C. from June 22 - 25, 2021. The entire field competed in the same division and played from 6,348 yards.

Jake Clayton’s opening round of the NC Junior Boys’ Championship got off to an up and down start. Clayton of Burlington, had just picked up his birdie putt from the center of No.10’s cup as the rules officials blew the air horn that suspended play due to inclement weather. It wouldn't be until two hours later in the afternoon when play would resume.

Clayton was 1-under through his first hole and said after his round that the weather delay did not affect the rest of his round, “[On No.11, his second hole] I hit an okay drive and had about 250 out. Then I hit a 3-wood down there to about six or seven feet, and made the putt.”

Clayton was now 3-under-par through his first two holes and rain slowly began to dissipate to clear a path to find another birdie on the par-4 No.12.

“Consistency,” Clayton said was the key to his success on Tuesday. “I was hitting most of the fairways, most of the greens, and I managed to make a couple of good putts.”

Clayton would drop a shot after a missed par putt on No. 14 but would find an equalizing birdie on the par-5 No.16. However, Clayton signed off on a bogey, bogey finish on Nos. 17 and 18 to bring his front-nine score to 34, 2-under-par.

Following the turn Clayton would drop his third consecutive shot on the par-4 No.1. Unphased with a sway of momentum in a negative direction, Clayton responded excellently with his second eagle of the day on the par-5, fourth hole holing out from 120 yards.

“I was 120 yards, down wind, I couldn't see it, and it was blind. Then two of the guys ahead of us had a good reaction to it. It was a knock-down pitching wedge.”

At this time in Clayton’s round he entered a three-way tie with the leaders in the clubhouse at 3-under-par, 68. Jack Wieler of Waxhaw had signed off on one 3-under and Landon Hawley was the other.

The field was cut at 6-over-par, 77 for the Round of 64 on Wednesday morning. Jake Clayton is entering Wednesday morning round as the No.1 seed, after receiving medalist honors after his 4-under-par, 67 performance on Tuesday.
