Childress is highest seed left at N.C. Boys'

Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. advances to the round of 16 as the highest remaining seed at No. 2.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 20, 2018) -- Round of 64 and round of 32 match results of the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. is the highest remaining seed in the North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship at No. 2, but not with out some close calls. Childress won his match in the round of 64 in 20 holes over No. 63 seed Clayson Good of Durham, N.C. Childress' second round of match play was less stressful, defeating No. 31 seed Austin Alexander of Rutherfordton, N.C., 5 and 4.

The big upset of the day was No. 64 seed AJ Shaffer of Horse Shoe, N.C., defeating No. 1 seed Alex Goff of Kings Mountain, N.C., 2 and 1. Goff shot 11 strokes better than Shaffer in the qualifying, but Shaffer came out on top in match play.

The matchup to watch in the round of 16 will be Childress against No. 50 seed Tyler Dechellis of Clayton, N.C. Despite Dechellis' low seed, he has eight top-five finishes in 2018, including two second place finishes, and will certainly look to continue that good form.

The championship format consists of 18 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play (6 rounds). The field was cut to the low 64 for match play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 22, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
