CGA to Conduct 249 Tournaments in '16

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (January 15, 2016) -- The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) has confirmed the sites and dates for its 2016 championship and tournament schedules. The CGA is entering its 107th year of conducting state and regional championships for amateur golfers.

The CGA will conduct 249 tournaments this year, including: 42 championships, 41 CGA championship qualifiers, 16 USGA national championship qualifiers, five team match events, 99 one-day tournaments, 45 Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) events, and an island four-ball getaway.

The Country Club of Charleston will host the 102nd Carolinas Amateur Championship

The 102nd edition of CGA's flagship event, the Carolinas Amateur Championship, will be contested July 14-17 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. The club has hosted six previous Carolinas Amateurs, including the championship's second playing in 1911.

"The Country Club of Charleston is proud to continue a tradition it helped begin back in 1909 by hosting the 102nd Carolina's Amateur Championship," said Cordes Ford, club president. "As a founding club of the Carolinas Golf Association, we are excited to again bring together the best amateur golfers from North and South Carolina and help crown this year's champion."

Seth Raynor designed the course at the Country Club of Charleston, which opened in 1925. John LaFoy made revisions in 1990-1991 following Hurricane Hugo, with additional revisions from Brian Silva in 2007. At the last Carolinas Amateur hosted by the club in 2009, Jack Fields of Southern Pines, N.C. defeated Josh Gallman of Gaffney, S.C, 8 & 7. That was the final year the championship was contested as match play. Now it is a 72-hole stroke-play competition.

Two CGA championships will also be contested at Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. In its 65th playing, the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship returns to the club from May 4-8 for the 16th consecutive year. The 4th Jimmy Creed Boys' Invitational is set to be played at the club from May 28-29.

In women's golf, the 90th Carolinas Women's Amateur travels to The Reserve Club in Pawley's Island, S.C from May 16-18. The CGA is expanding the number of ladies' only one-day events. The kickoff event will be a four-ball tournament at Croasdaile Country Club in Durham, N.C. on March 21. A half dozen other one-day events will be held at courses across the Carolinas. Visit www.carolinasgolf.org/women for more information.

In junior golf, the CGA boasts an impressive championship season for boys and girls.  The 67th Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship will be played July 26-28 at The Windermere Club in Blythewood, S.C. Over the same days, the 60th Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship will be contested at Colonial Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.

TYGA, which is the CGA’s program for North Carolina junior golfers, offers a tournament schedule geared for all levels of abilities. The 45 events set for this year are open to boys and girls ages 6-18. "TYGA Tots" will continue to provide tournament golf experience for 6-11 year olds. Online registration for TYGA events is available at www.tygajuniorgolf.org.

The CGA One-Day Tournament program offers individual and four-ball competitions using both gross and net formats. The 49 tournaments are open any CGA member with a USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club. View the One-Day schedule at www.carolinasgolf.org/One-Day-Tournaments

The Carolinas Senior Four-Ball One-Day Tournament series will have 50 events on its 2016 schedule. The popular two-man, best-ball, one-day tournaments open to male amateurs over the age of 55, historically have more entrants than spots available at most events. Entries are accepted on a first come-first served basis for all one-day tournaments. View the Senior Four-Ball One-Day schedule at www.carolinasgolf.org/senior-four-ball

A complete list of CGA championships, one-day tournaments, senior four-ball one-day tournaments, ladies' one-day events, TYGA events, USGA qualifying in the Carolinas, and online registration is available on the CGA website at www.carolinasgolf.org/tournaments or by calling the CGA at 910-673-1000. Membership at a CGA member club is required to compete in any CGA championships and one-day tournaments.
