This is Kathryn Carson's final summer to compete on the junior golf circuit and she's making it count. The future East Carolina Pirate carded a tournament-low 68 in the second round of stroke play qualifying, which earned her medalist honors and the No. 1 seed in match play. Carson carded five birdies against one bogey in Wednesday morning's stroke play qualifying round and took that momentum into the Round of 32 matches.

Holly McCann of Raleigh, N.C. was the only other player in red numbers at the end of stroke play qualifying. McCann finished with 3-under-par 69 in the second round of stroke play qualifying which vaulted her up the leaderboard and into the No. 2 slot. Sophie Holland, the co-leader after round one, carded a one-over-par 73 in the second round to finish at 144 (even par) and take the No. 3 seed. 13-year-old Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. finished with 145 and claimed the No. 4 seed.

Other notables who advanced to match play are Natalie Petersen, the 2016 Dogwood State Girls' Champion; Muskan Uppal, fresh off competing in the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship; Nicole Adam, the 10th-ranked North Carolina junior; and Madison Isaacson, who already has two wins under her belt in 2017.

The Round of 32 matches were a test of endurance in Wednesday afternoon's heat. Shalie Williams of Camden, N.C. chipped in for birdie on the second playoff hole to claim the 32nd qualifying spot, but fell to No. 1 seed Kathryn Carson 5&3. Carson called the match "very tough." Carson will face her neighbor Charleigh Hodges, also of Mooresville, N.C., in the Round of 16.

A pair of 13-year-olds competed in the Round of 32 for a coveted spot in the Round of 16 matches. Katherine Schuster bested Morgan Ketchum 4&3 in a match that saw many long putts drained on both sides. No. 4 seed Schuster will face Lotte Fox of Raleigh, N.C. in the Round of 16. No. 2 seed Holly McCann defeated Lorin Wagler 5&4 and will face No. 18 seed Emelia Pack in the Round of 16 matches. Almost all higher seeds advanced to the Round of 16 matches with the exception of Nina Kouchi of Charlotte, N.C. who defeated Amy Wooten of Clinton, N.C. in a match that came all the way down to the final hole. Kouchi, the No. 23 seed, will face No. 7 seed Mackenzie Battle on Thursday morning.

The Round of 16 matches will be held Thursday morning and play will continue Thursday afternoon with Quarterfinal matches. Semifinals and the championship match will be held Friday, June 16.
