Brogden Wins NC Senior Women's Am in Record Fashion

 

WILSON, N.C. (April 19, 2017) -- Final results of the Carolinas Golf Association's 14^th North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship at Wilson Country Club in Wilson, N.C. on Wednesday, April 19th (Par 36-36--72, 5563 Yards, Course/Slope Rating 73.3/124).

Last year's runner-up, Pat Brogden of Garner made a memorable mark Wednesday on North Carolina Senior Women's history, posting the tournament low round of four-under 68 to set a championship scoring record at two-under 142. "68 was not on my mind this morning," said the 62-year-old Brogden. "But it certainly was fun!"

Beginning the final round with a two shot lead over Angela Stewart of Greenville, Brogden avoided making a single bogey. Instead, three birdies on the outward nine catapulted her well in front of the field. She grinded-out pars on the back nine to maintain her bogey-free round, making a handful of par-saving putts over four feet. After converting one such putt on the penultimate hole, Brogden let loose a volley of fist pumps.

"It was important to me to avoid bogey all day," said Brogden after setting the women's course record at Wilson Country Club. Only missing three greens on Wednesday, she also managed to avoid three putts the entire championship. Her fourteen stroke winning margin is another championship record.

Defending champion Patty Moore of Charlotte, who had previously held the championship scoring record at 143, finished alone in second place at 156.

A three time winner of this event, Brogden had not won the championship since 2012. In recent years she battled injuries which kept her out of competition. "I've always respected this tournament," Brogden said, now holding eleven overall CGA titles. "My goal is always to win it if I play."

2005 champion Dianne Yelovich of Pinehurst, won both the Carolinas Division and low Super Senior award (65+) with a two-day total of 158. The Carolinas Division plays a shorter course.

The North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and a Carolinas division (shorter course). Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the CGA and has an active GHIN^® USGA Handicap Index^® at a CGA member club.

About Wilson Country Club

Wilson Country Club was opened in May 1915 on the site that is currently known as Willow Springs Country Club. The club grew at a rapid rate following WWII and the size of the membership eventually grew too large for its initial home. Unable to expand the facilities, the club moved across town to its current site in 1973. Mr. William Byrd designed the new layout that we are so proud of today. Mr. Byrd designed and remodeled over 100 golf courses during his career which spanned nearly five decades. His Wilson Country Club design still receives rave reviews for its beauty and overall playability. The club has hosted nine Carolinas Golf Association majors including the 2010 NC Men’s Amateur.

Wilson Country Club underwent a renovation in 2005 to modernize the course and improve the putting surfaces. The renowned architect Mr. John Lafoy was chosen to do the renovation and work began in May, 2005. John Lafoy has redesigned over 100 golf courses throughout the country and has redesigned many classic layouts, including those of architects A.W. Tillinghast, Alistair Mackenzie, Seth Raynor, Charles Blair MacDonald and numerous Donald Ross designs. The redesign of Wilson Country Club has certainly made it one of the finest golf courses in North Carolina.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
